BERLIN, Germany, March 5. FOUR meet records fell during the first day of long course meter swimming at the International Swim Meet held in Berlin, Germany. Italy's Federica Pellegrini accounted for half of the new marks.<\/p>\n
Pellegrini crushed the meet record in the women's 800 free with a time of 8:31.07. Her time far surpassed Sara Isakovic's 2007 record of 8:45.87. Germany's Isabele Harle (8:46.16) and Franziska Jansen (8:49.35) finished second and third. Pellegrini's compatriot Federico Colbertaldo snagged the men's 1500 free title in 15:37.75, while Poland's Krzyszstof Pielowski (15:48.57) and Maciej Hreniak (15:58.44) took second and third.<\/p>\n
Pellegrini returned in the women's 400 free to smash another meet record. The world-record holder with a 3:59.15 from last year, Pellegrini posted a 4:05.57 for the win. That time chopped five seconds from Annika Lurz's 2008 mark of 4:10.52. The Netherlands' Rieneke Terink took second in 4:15.10, while Jansen picked up a second podium with a third-place 4:17.53. Colbertaldo won as well with a 3:53.89 in the men's 400 free. Italy's Massimiliano Rossolino finished second in 3:55.26, while teammate Emiliano Brembilla claimed third in 3:55.27.<\/p>\n
Italy's Francesca Segat provided the third meet record of the day in the women's 200 IM. She hit the wall in 2:17.93 to eclipse the 2:18.12 set by Annika Liebs back in 2005. Italy's Erica Buratto touched second in 2:18.49, while Germany's Isabelle Tschirch earned third in 2:19.07. Poland's Marcin Tarczynski captured the men's 200 IM in 2:05.99, while Great Britain's Chris Walker-Hebborn placed second in 2:06.00. Norway's Alexander Broberg Skeltved rounded out the top three in 2:07.53. <\/p>\n
The fourth meet record of the day fell to Great Britain's Michael Jamieson. He turned in a 2:12.62 to win the men's 200 breast and erase the 2007 standard of 2:17.05 set by Andreas Losel. Jamieson's teammate Andrew Willis finished second in 2:15.11 (also under the old record), while Italy's Alberto Catalano took third in 2:19.70. Italy's Chiara Boggiatto paced the women's 200 breast in 2:32.77, while Poland's Paulina Szydlo took second in 2:34.55. Italy's Ilaria Scarcella placed third in 2:34.71. <\/p>\n
The Netherlands' Lieke Verouden topped the women's 400 IM in 4:52.40, while Great Britain's Rachel Williams finished second in 4:57.65. Teammate Lucy Budmir wound up third in 5:10.60. Italy's Luca Marin followed with a 4:27.88 for the men's 400 IM win. Teammate Giorgio Battistella touched second in 4:28.30, while Great Britain's Andrew Willis took third in 4:30.57. <\/p>\n
Italy's Roberta Ioppi won the women's 200 back in 2:15.64, while Poland's Klaudia Nazieblo took second in 2:16.76. Denmark's Pernille Larsen wound up third in 2:18.63. Poland's Radoslaw Kawecki followed in the men's 200 back with a winning 2:01.16. Italy's Mirco Di Tora finished second in 2:06.03, while Poland's Krzysztof Jankiewicz captured third in 2:06.08.<\/p>\n
In the sprint 50 fly, Norway's Ingvild Snildal won in 27.25. Germany's Dorothea Brandt finished second in 28.19, while Norway's Henriette Brekke completed the women's podium in 28.31. Russia's Nikolay Skvortsov touched out Poland's Konrad Czerniak, 24.37 to 24.47, in the men's 50 fly.
