FORT PIERCE, Florida, March 3. INDIAN River State College got off to a strong start at the NJCAA Championships held in short course yards this weekend. IRSC is currently riding streaks of 35 and 28, respectively for winning the men's and women's NJCAA national title.<\/p>\n
After the first day of swimming, Indian River led the women's team race with 80 points, while Daytona stood second with 68 points. Darton (64), Ocean County (48) and Genesee (48) completed the top five. Among the men, Indian River also led the way with 80 points. Lincoln tied with Daytona for second with matching tallies of 66 points. Darton (60) and Monroe (56) finished fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n
Indian River's Monika Mialka, Mary Frank, Jennifer Marquez and Vanessa Hanbury won the women's 400 medley relay in a time of 3:45.56. The performance finished less than a second off the NJCAA-record time of 3:44.70 set by IRSC last year. Daytona's Nicole Gaynor, Kimba Collymore, Razan Taha and Megan Wolfe placed second in 4:00.37, while Darton's Amanda Burnette, Jenna Gilbert, Lindsey Johnson and Sadie Roberts took third in 4:08.80.<\/p>\n
Mialka leadoff IRSC in 55.90, just missing her 2009 NJCAA national mark of 55.49. <\/p>\n
Indian River swept the 400 medley relays as the men's team of Harry Traystman, Jordan Arencibia, Donaven Van Der Merwe and Kelley Wyman claimed the title in 3:17.41. Lincoln's Alex Madhuizen, Chris Canene, Bryce Bohman and Daniel Corley finished second in 3:26.83. Daytona's Raymond DePadau, Deniz Hekmati, Dan Marini and Zach Bonnema wound up third in 3:27.57.<\/p>\n
The River kept rolling in the women's 800 free relay as Mialka, Hanbury, Jessica Chandlee and Rebecca Harrison claimed the title in 7:25.22. Daytona's Collymore, Marie Hanft, Taha and Wolfe placed second in 7:58.97. Darton's Roberts, Aeriel Breneman, Rachel Money and Johnson completed the top three in 8:07.47.<\/p>\n
IRSC completed the title sweep for the first evening of action when John Ellis, Corey Day, Max Abreu and Mateo De Angulo clocked a 6:45.33 to win the men's 800 free relay. Daytona's Will Collum, Patrick O'Malley, Kevin Doran and Kory Sprignoli took second in 6:48.72.
