In their second showdown and first dual meet in the 2016-2017 season, NJCAA powerhouse Indian River took down the University of Tampa men and women. The Indian River men won the meet 156-106, while the women came out with a narrow two-point win, 132-130.<\/p>\n

In the men\u2019s meet, Indian River was dominant winning 11 of the 15 contested events. Indian River delivered the first blow to the Spartans with an opening relay win, but Tampa battled right back with a 1-2-3 sweep in the men\u2019s 1,000 led by junior <\/span>Tommy Reminger. <\/b>Senior All-American <\/span>Martin Hammer <\/b>was another individual event winner for the Spartans, taking the 50 freestyle (21.00). Freshman <\/span>Brett Saunders <\/b>recorded Tampa\u2019s only other two wins, in the 200 back (1:52.76) and 200 IM (1:54.12).<\/span><\/p>\n

The women\u2019s meet was a battle throughout that came down to the last relay. While the meet was only decided by 2 points, similar to the men\u2019s meet Indian River was first in 11 of the 15 contested events. The Spartan women kept it close with the depth of their roster, consistently finishing 2-3-4 in any event won by Indian River to manage the point swing. The Spartans did win four events throughout the meet, including first place finishes from sophomore <\/span>Ali Lombardi <\/b>in the 1,000 free (10:48.42), sophomore <\/span>Izzy Spalding <\/b>in the 200 butterfly (2:11.92), sophomore <\/span>McKenzie Street <\/b>in the 200 breast (2:27.58), and junior <\/span>Brittany Bayes <\/b>in the 500 free (5:19.67). If just one of those other races had gone to Tampa the women would have came away with a victory, but Indian River racked up too many wins in individual and relay events for the D2 school to catch them. <\/span><\/p>\n
