THE UNIVERSITY of Texas Longhorns extended their margin over the rest of the field on the final day of the men's NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships to give coach Eddie Reese his second straight NCAA team title. The three-day meet was held on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.

The 'Horns scored 149 points on the final day to wind up with 597.5, 140 ahead of Stanford, with 457.5. Tennessee, with its best showing in years, was third with 330.5 points.

USC was fourth with 299, followed by Florida with 265 and Arizona with 251. Seventh place went to Auburns with 236, eighth to California with 191, ninth to Minnesota with 176, and Michigan rounded out the top 10 with 161. Host Texas A&M finished 11th with 156 points. To the surprsie of no one, Texas coach Eddie Reese was named "Coach of the Meet."

Texas senior Nate Dusing, who won the "Swimmer of the Meet" award, led all individual scoring with 57 points. 'Horns diver Troy Dumis was second with 53 points, followed by USC's Klete Keller and Michigan's Tim Siciliano with 51 apiece.

While the outcome of the team race was a foregone conclusion before tonight's finals even began, no one could have predicted the fireworks that exploded in the pool tonight. Four American records were broken and another one tied. And these weren't just any old records that were broken–they were some of the toughest, and oldest, in the books.

Here's a rundown of tonight's events:

1650 YARD FREESTYLE
Last September, Chris Thompson set an American record in finishing third in the 1500 at the Sydney Olympics, ending a 16-year medal drought for the USA. Tonight, Thompson served notice that he is for real: Aussies, beware: Here comes Chris Thompson!

Thompson had never won an NCAA title before tonight, and this was his last chance. Just two nights ago he had been out-touched by Klete Keller in the 500 by four-hundredths of a second. He wanted the 1650–he wanted it bad! And another thing: he wanted the record–Tom Dolan's 14:29.31 from six years ago.

The Michigan senior was up against the toughest mile field ever assembled in the US of A, but he demolished it from the start. Thompson split a blazing 50.50 for the first 100 yards, as only Virginia's Ian Prichard (50.70) and USC's Erik Vendt (50.74) even tried to stay close. But they couldn't do it–no one could. Thompson picked up a second on the field in the next 100, then another second on the third 100, then…well, you've got the picture.

The Oregon native split 1:43.27 at the 200 yard turn, 4:21.46 at the 500, 8:44.11 at the 1000–an NCAA and American record–and never slowed down, splitting 52-high to 53-low per 100.

Thompson touched in 14:26.62 to a deafening roar from the capacity crowd of 1,800, taking almost three seconds off Dolan's American–and University of Michigan–record.

The rest of the field did itself proud. Thompson's Michigan teammate, Tim Siciliano, was second in 14:41.84, beating out USC's Erik Vendt (14:45.69) just as he did last night in the 400 IM.

Two freshmen followed with sub-14:50s: Minnesota's Justin Mortimer (14:47.82) and Harvard's John Cole (14:49.48), boding well for the future of American distance swimming. In all, ten swimmers cracked 15 minutes.

Thompson's performance is, arguably, the second fastest short course "mile" swim ever. Australia's Grant Hackett holds the record for 1500 meters (short course) at 14:19.55.

200 YARD BACKSTROKE
Texas' Nate Dusing only qualified fourth in the 200 back, but he was on a roll and was confident he could win. The new 200 IM record-holder went out fast, turning in third place at the 50 (23.86), but only five-hundredths behind the leader, Stanford's Peter Marshall.

The Texas senior gained the lead on the third length, and by the time he reached the halfway mark in 49.50, had the race under control. Fending off a late charge by Stanford's Markus Rogan, he touched in 1:41.52, 12-hundredths ahead of the fast-closing Austrian.

Georgia's Marc Lindsay, the top qualifier, followed in third in 1:42.04, as five swimmers swam 1:42s or better.

100 YARD FREESTYLE
Anthony Ervin burst on the international scene last year as an unheralded Cal freshman. At NCAAs he won both the 50 and 100 free, setting a short course world mark of 21.21 for 50 meters (since broken by Britain's Mark Foster).

Six moths later at the Olympic Games in Sydney, he tied his teammate, Gary Hall, Jr., for the gold medal in the 50 and led off the USA's silver medal-winning 400m freestyle relay.

By the time he arrived in College Station this week, he was the overwhelming favorite to repeat his sprint triumphs. But the Ervin Express was derailed Thursday evening, when Stanford's Anthony Robinson touched him out in the 50.

Not to worry–the setback was only temporary. The Express is back on track and chugging full steam ahead.

Tonight, the soft-spoken Cal sophomore tied the 14 year-old American record in the 100 free set by the legendary Matt Biondi. Splitting an incredible 19.61 at the 50, Ervin brought the race home faster than anyone else to touch in 41.80.

The race was never close. Arizona's Roland Schoeman was second in an outstanding 42.58, while Auburn's Greg Busse, who swam 42.53 in prelims, was third in 42.65.

Ervin becomes only the second man to break 42 seconds in the 100. He is also now the University of California co-record-holder in the 100 free.

200 YARD BREASTSTROKE
Before the buzz from the 100 free had died down, the finalists for the 200 breast were on the blocks…and generating a bit of a buzz of their own.

In Lane 4 stood Texas freshman Brendan Hansen, winner of the 100 last night, and top qualifier in the 200 this morning. Hansen's 1:54.63 morning swim had gotten a few folks wondering out loud whether he might challenge Mike Barrowman's 11 year-old mark of 1:53.77, a record that, for years, seemed as though it might last forever.

Wonder no more. Hansen blasted from the blocks and, clearly, was going for Barrowman's record. But so was the swimmer in lane 5, Auburn's Dave Denniston.

In fact it was Denniston who touched first at the 50, 25.13 to Hansen's 25.39. And it was Denniston ahead at the 100, 53.67 to 54.39. (Yes, those are actually split times!!)

Hansen picked up a tenth of a second on the third 50, but at the three-quarters mark, the War Eagle senior still had the lead, 1:27.09 to 1:27.72.

But Hansen kept up the torrid pace while Denniston slipped about a second on the final 50. That was enough to allow Hansen to surge ahead at the finish to touch in 1:53.11–a new American, NCAA and everything-else record. Denniston touched right behind in 1:53.48, the second fastest 200 breast in history and a swim that, any other year, would have earned him "Performance of the Meet" honors.

200 YARD BUTTERFLY
Last year, Stanford's Adam Messner came from behind to overtake South Carolina's Zsolt Gaspar to win the NCAA title in the 200 fly. As he mounted the block tonight, the Cardinal senior was hungry for a second victory. But the field was tightly bunched–all eight finalists had swum within six-tenths of each other in prelims. It was anybody's race.

As expected, Messner took the race out hard, splitting 23.53, as only Southern Cal's Jeff Lee was faster (23.48). Then Messner made his move, splitting 50.15, four-tenths ahead of Florida's Duncan Sherrard, the top qualifier, in second.

The two combatants matched each other stroke-for-stroke on the third 50, as they gradually put some open water between themselves and the rest of the field.

With 50 yards to go, all Messner had to do was hold on. But that wouldn't be easy. Gradually, inexorably, stroke-by-stroke, Sherrard kept whittling away at Messner's lead. As the two men touched, he had carved 34-hundredths from that 40-hundredths of a second lead.

If it had been a 205 yard butterfly race, Sherrard would have won. But it was 200 yards, and Messner had his second NCAA title, 1:43.12 to Sherrard's 1:43.18.

10-METER PLATFORM DIVING
Despite trailing in third place during prelims, Miami sophomore Kyle Prandi left no doubt whatsoever that, when it comes to the finals of the 10-meter platform, he is The Man.

Prandi scored 591.75 points to outdistance Texas junior Justin Dumais by almost 27 points. Dumais, the favorite, had led through almost all the preliminary rounds.

Arizona freshman Omar Ojeda was only two points behind Dumais while Tennessee senior Gabi Chereches, who was in second in the prelims, dropped to fourth, less than two points behind Ojeda.

400 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY
What do you get when you put together a relay with four guys who can all split 42s? Why, an American and NCAA record of course — and a chorus of ear-splitting "Hook 'em 'Horns!" cheers.

What a perfect way for Eddie's Army to end this meet!: Regaining the 400 yard freestyle relay record that had been snatched by Cal at last season's Pac-10 meet.

The record was an impressive one. Cal had gone 2:49.85, breaking the NCAA mark by more than a second. Could the 'Horns crack it? By jiminy, they sure 'nuff were gonna try.

Nate Dusing got the ball rolling with a 42.63 lead-off, not bad for a butterflyer-backstroker. Ian Crocker then threw in a 42.21. Tommy Hannan followed with a 42.55 and Jamie Rauch anchored in 42.41. The total: 2:49.80. The fastest time ever swum for the event!

Cal, minus Swiss star Karel Novy, was a distant second in 2:52.12–despite Anthony Ervin's 41.08 anchor leg–fastest relay split of all time.

Arizona, buoyed by Roland Schoeman's 41.70 split, was third in 2:53.27.

The 2001 NCAA Championships were history. All that was left was for Eddie to take a little swim…in his clothes. There he goes…..

NCAA DIV.
