Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post honored the United States Olympic Swim Team <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/washington-post-honors-u-s-olympic-swim-team-among-sports-figures-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by naming them the overall Sport Figures of the Year for 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The piece focuses on the team\u2019s incredible success in Rio de Janeiro with a special focus on Olympians <\/span><b>Michael Phelps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who themselves were responsible for bringing home nine gold medals (five individual, four relay). Phelps, as we all know, continued to cement his legacy as the Greatest Olympian of All-Time with his performances in Rio, while Ledecky continued to push the boundaries of what is possible by slashing her own world records and leaving the best in the world far behind. In total, the U.S. Swim Team brought home 16 of the 46 gold medals won by Team USA in Brazil. The split between the two organizations was effective on December 31st. Speedo, while currently based in England, was actually founded in Sydney, Australia, back in 1914. Many notable Australian Olympic swimmers have won gold competing in Speedo, from the time of <\/span><b>Dawn Fraser <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all the way up to the most recent Olympics, where <\/span><b>Cameron McEvoy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and siblings <\/span><b>Emma McKeon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>David McKeon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repped the brand. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-diving-winter-nationals-comes-to-a-close\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 USA Diving Winter National Championships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took place before the holidays in Columbus, Ohio, doubling up as a qualifying event for the 2017 FISU Universiade and 2017 FINA World Championships (one-meter only). On springboard, 2016 Olympians <\/span><b>Michael Hixon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(one-meter) and <\/span><b>Steele Johnson <\/b>(three-<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meter) claimed first on each board, while <\/span><b>David Dinsmore <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Miami came away with the individual win in a tight platform competition. <\/span><b>Zhipeng Zeng <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also placed in the top three in each individual event, and he will meet Hixon and Johnson again at Big Ten\u2019s in February. On the women\u2019s side, a pair of newcomers took wins on springboard. 15-year-old World Junior Champion <\/span><b>Maria Coburn <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the one-meter event and 13-year-old <\/span><b>Hailey Hernandez <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the 3 meter event. But the field wasn\u2019t all dominated by newcomers, as Olympian <\/span><b>Amy Cozad <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had a dominant performance on platform to win by nearly 50 points. That announcement came just a week after it was reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/princeton-mens-swimming-and-diving-season-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the team\u2019s season was suspended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after misogynistic and racist messages from the team members were discovered on a university listserv. In a press release issued by the University, Ford Family Director of Athletics <strong>Mollie<\/strong> <strong>Marcoux Samaan<\/strong> commented, \u201cWe expect appropriate, respectful conduct from them at all times. The behavior that we have learned about is simply unacceptable. The New York Times gathered several days worth of interviews <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/27\/sports\/olympics\/russia-doping.html?smprod=nytcore-iphone&amp;smid=nytcore-iphone-share&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in their most recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which sheds light on the doping program the country had in place back to the Sochi Olympic Games in 2014. Their admittance is likely motivated by the country\u2019s desire to be reinstated as a nation able to hold major competitions and perform drug tests. While the acting director general of the country\u2019s national anti-doping agency, <\/span><b>Anna Antseliovich<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said the operation \u201cwas an institutional conspiracy,\u201d she also emphasized that top Russian officials, including Russian President <\/span><b>Vladimir Putin<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had no knowledge of the program. That point was emphasized by many of those interviewed, which suggest that this was not a \u201cstate-sponsored\u201d doping program. The Times had previously reported on the Russian doping controversies back in May of 2016, when they published a detailed tell-all from <\/span><b>Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that exposed the fraudulent activities that were taking place within the Russian anti-doping agency. The doctor\u2019s testimony was then used by the World Anti-Doping Agency and <\/span><b>Richard McLaren<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who released his first\u00a0Independent Person\u2019s Report prior to the 2016 Olympic Games <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/what-the-independent-investigation-into-russias-systematic-doping-program-means-to-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that confirmed the systematic doping operation present in Russia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the first edition of the The Week That Was in 2017!
