COLLEGE STATION, Texas, February 25. THE Texas men’s team maintained its lead while the Texas A&M women took over first place following the second day of action at the 2010 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas.<\/p>\n
On the women’s side, Texas A&M dominated the first three swimming events as Aggies won titles in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley events. Maria Sommer, Alia Atkinson, Sarah Woods and Julia Wilkinson took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay while Big 12 overall record holder Kristen Heiss earned her second Big 12 championship in the 500 freestyle. It was her third individual career title at the Big 12 Championships. Wilkinson nabbed her second title of the day with a time of 1:55.81 in the 200-yard individual medley.<\/p>\n
On the one-meter springboard, A&M junior Jaele Patrick won her first-career championship after scoring 317.25 points. Teammate Janie Potvin followed with 268.45, while Texas’ Lauren Caldwell took the bronze after totaling a score of 265.20.<\/p>\n
For the men, it was all Texas as the Longhorns’ Jackson Wilcox (4:16.25) grabbed the 500 freestyle title for the second year in a row and Jimmy Feigen, Neil Caskey, Ben Vanroekel and Dave Walters notched a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:17.75. Austin Surhoff set a new Big 12 Championship meet record (1:43.26) as he held off teammate Ricky Berens in the 200-yard individual medley. Berens set the previous record at the 2009 Big 12 Championships.<\/p>\n
In the final event of the day, UT’s Karlee Bispo and Jimmy Feigen captured titles in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 22.36 and 19.34, respectively.<\/p>\n
The championships resume Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. The women’s three-meter diving finals begin at 5 p.m., with swimming finals kicking off at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
