Michael Phelps’\u00a0<\/strong>marriage and\u00a0Ryan Lochte’s<\/strong> proposal were among two of the most read stories in September\/October of 2016.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Michael Phelps, Nicole Johnson Tie The Knot With Family and Friends<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

2016 was a whilrwind of excitement for\u00a0Michael\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Nicole Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>as the two welcomed their son\u00a0Boomer\u00a0<\/strong>and tied the knot with family and friends in Mexico.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a011 Coaches Reveal the Funniest Excuses They Have Ever Heard<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Swimming World<\/em> intern\u00a0Chandler Brandes\u00a0<\/strong>polled several college coaches to hear the most creative excuses they have ever heard.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Confessions of a Butterflyer<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

The butterfly stroke sometimes gets a bad rap among swimmers, but to those who have practiced for hours to master the art of butterfly it is a magical stroke.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Lady Ledecky Lets Loose On The Ellen Show<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>was just one of the many Olympians to visit “The Ellen Show” in the post-Rio excitement. While there Ledecky gifted host\u00a0Ellen Degeneres<\/strong> with two Team USA swim caps, before showing off her “Foot Flickers” skills.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Why Do We Swim?<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

One of\u00a0Swimming World’s<\/em> college interns dove into the complex question of “Why Do We Swim?” A question that leads to many complex answers.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Ryan Lochte Proposes To Girlfriend Kayla Reid<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Ryan Lochte<\/strong> proposed to his girlfriend\u00a0Kayla Reid\u00a0<\/strong>in early October, capping off an up-and-down emotional Olympic year for the Olympian. Reid, who works as a model, stuck with Lochte through his well-publicized night of drinking in Rio and for that Lochte explained to the press that she’s “the one.”<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Joseph Schooling\u2019s $750,000 Olympic Gold Bonus Raises Questions in the NCAA<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

According to NCAA amateur status rules, college athletes cannot accept gifts of any kind throughout their careers, they do allow for the student-athletes to accept the bonuses for winning Olympic medals. However, the amount that an U.S. Olympian brings home pales in comparison to the amount that Singapore’s\u00a0Joseph Schooling\u00a0<\/strong>was awarded for his gold medal.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0Suspensions for Lochte, Feigen, Bentz and Conger Announced<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

After a well-publicized night out drinking, which included wild variations of what occurred, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Swimming delivered suspensions for\u00a0Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jack Conger<\/strong>. Lochte received the largest suspension, putting him out of all major competitions through the 2017 World Championships.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0Connor Jaeger \u201cEffectively Retired,\u201d Pursuing Manhattan Real Estate Industry<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Olympic silver medalist\u00a0Connor Jaeger<\/strong> announced that he was switching his vision from swimming to real estate following a successful 2016 Rio showing. Jaeger relocated from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Hoboken, N.J. to seek a job within the Manhattan real estate industry.<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0Sarah Thomas Completes 82-Mile Swim Across Lake Powell<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Former UConn swimmer,\u00a0Sarah Thomas<\/strong>, completed the 82-mile swim across Lake Powell in early October completely unassisted, qualifying her for a record for an unassisted swim. The entire swim took Powell 56 hours to complete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
