COLUMBUS, Ohio, February 24. THE No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men’s swimming and diving team sits in first place after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. U-M swept both relay events, including a record-setting performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay, on the evening to take the early lead.<\/p>\n
Michigan, winner of the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay, earned all 80 points up for grabs on day one. No. 9 Ohio State sits in second with 64 points after finishing runner-up to the Wolverines in both relays.<\/p>\n
In the second and final relay of the evening, the Maize and Blue picked up its first NCAA automatic qualifying time while setting a Big Ten, Big Ten Championships and pool record. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn.\/Towson), senior Andr&é Schultz (Sao Paolo, Brazil\/Colegio Palmares), senior Charlie Houchin (Raleigh, N.C.\/William G. Enloe) and Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif.\/Riverside Poly) finished in 6:15.80, almost eight seconds faster than second-place Ohio State.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines kicked off the evening with a season-best time in the 200-yard medley relay, touching the wall in 1:25.72. The quartet of Alon Mandel (Netanya, Israel\/Eldad), Chris Brady (Wilmington, Del.\/Mount Pleasant), James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill.\/Saint Patrick) and Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn.\/Chaska) combined for the relay win, improving their season-best time by almost three seconds.<\/p>\n
The Big Ten Championships will continue tomorrow (Feb. 25), with preliminaries beginning at noon and finals at 7 p.m. Tomorrow’s events include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and 400-yard medley relay.<\/p>\n
