It\u2019s been another amazing year of aquatics\u00a0competition, including the long-awaited Rio Olympics, and Swimming World had our readers covered every step of the way. \u00a0During the next few days, we\u2019ll take a look back in \u201cSplashbacks\u201d, the most read stories of 2016.<\/p>\n

The May-June 2016 period was full of many ups and downs as swimmers competed for their final Olympic Trials cuts and a chance to perform at the 2016 Olympic Trials in Omaha. It was also a period of happiness and sadness as the swimming community welcomed the birth of\u00a0Boomer Phelps<\/strong>, but said goodbye to\u00a0Charlie Keating IV<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0USA Swimming Releases Olympic Trials Psych Sheet<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

The first of two highly anticipated events in the summer of 2016, viewers could not get enough of the USA Swimming Olympic Trials psych sheet. When the psych sheet was released in late June it quickly became one of the most viewed items throughout the May-June period.<\/p>\n

2. Calling All Swimmers With The Olympic Rings Tattoo<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

The swimming community reacted with disbelief in early May when British Paralympic champion\u00a0Josef Craig\u00a0<\/strong>was disqualified at the IPC European Swimming Championships because he had a tattoo of the Olympic rings tattooed over his heart.\u00a0Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>contributor\u00a0Casey Barrett<\/strong> set metaphorical pen to paper with a moving commentary on the disqualification when he called all Olympic rings tattoo bearers to share photos of their tattoos.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0New England Legend Joe Bernal Banned for Life By USA Swimming<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

May was a month of big and shocking news as former head coach and owner of Bernal’s Gators Swim Club in New England,\u00a0Joe Bernal<\/strong>, was banned for life by USA Swimming. Bernal, well known for coaching world record holders\u00a0David Berkoff<\/strong> and\u00a0Bobby Hackett<\/strong>, was banned for life after violating three separate versions of USA Swimming’s Code of Conduct meant to protest athletes from sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0How Swimming Saved Me, Recovering From Sexual Assault<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

The trial of\u00a0Brock Turner<\/strong>, a former swimmer on the Stanford swim team, came to a close many people found themselves disgusted with the way the trial was handled.\u00a0Swimming World’s<\/em> own\u00a0Caroline Kosciusko\u00a0<\/strong>was brave enough to pen her own story about how swimming saved her after she suffered from sexual assault.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Charlie Keating IV Killed In Action in Iraq Fighting ISIS<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

The swimming world suffered a great loss in May of 2016 when Navy Seal\u00a0Charlie Keating IV\u00a0<\/strong>was killed in action during a heavy firefight in northern Iraq. Charlie came from a family with a rich history in swimming. His father,\u00a0Charlie Keating III<\/strong>, was a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a029 Confessions of a Distance Swimmer<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Swimming World<\/em> intern\u00a0Chandler Brandes<\/strong> continued to produce ever relatable listicles as she penned the “29 Confessions of a Distance Swimmer” in late May.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Michael Phelps, Nicole Johnson Welcome Baby Boomer Robert Phelps<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>and his then fianc\u00e9 (now wife)\u00a0Nicole Johnson Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>welcomed their first son, Boomer Robert Phelps<\/strong>,\u00a0into the world on May 5th.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0Missing the Cut, But Not Missing the Point<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

With swimmers all around the country vying for Olympic Trials cuts before late June, one of\u00a0Swimming World’s\u00a0<\/em>interns expressed how even though you may have missed the cut, make sure you don’t miss the point.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a07 Things Swimmers Hate to Hear Coaches Say<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Coaches say a lot of different things throughout the course of a practice, but not all of them are what a swimmer likes to hear.<\/p>\n

10.\u00a012 Types of Swimmers Entering the Pool for Warm-up<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n
