TORONTO, Canada, February 20. THE final night of short course meter action at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports Championships featured a CIS meet record and an amazing evening by Erica Morningstar.<\/p>\n
Calgary won the women's team title with 679 points, while the UBC Thunderbirds placed second with 539 points. Montreal took third with 385.5 points, while Western Ontario (326.5) and Toronto (317.5) completed the top five.<\/p>\n
Calgary also captured the men's crown with 636.5 points. Toronto claimed second with 551 points, while the UBC Thunderbirds (377), Rouge (361.5) and Dalhousie (240) comprised the rest of the top five.<\/p>\n
The UC Dinos team of Katy Murdoch, Allison Long, Seanna Mitchell and Erica Morningstar ripped off a 4:03.28 to win the women's 400 medley relay in CIS record time. The performance wiped out the team-owned record of 4:04.20 set last year, and also happened to surpass the national club record of 4:03.51 also set a year ago. The team had company as Chrystele Roy L'Ecuyer, Sarah-Lee Hevey, Audrey Lacroix and Genevieve Saumur finished a close second in 4:03.78.<\/p>\n
Kevyn Peterson rolled to victory in the women's 800 free with a top time of 8:37.04, while Pamela Ruksys finished second in 8:38.90. Heather Maitland completed the top three in 8:45.81.<\/p>\n
Jason Block just missed the CIS record of 27.53 set by Scott Dickens last year in the men's 50 breast. Block won in 27.56 with Colin Russell showing some serious versatility with a second-place 27.73. Russell is usually a freestyle sprinter. Ryan Gow finished third in 28.32. Allison Long followed with a triumphant time of 31.10 in the women's 50 breast, while Marie-Pier Ratelle posted a second-place 31.77. Martha McCabe took third in 31.95.<\/p>\n
Nicholas Sinclair touched out Andrew Ford, 1:56.36 to 1:56.45, for the men's 200 back title. Cam Cummings wound up third in 1:57.41. Murdoch cruised in the women's 200 back with a 2:09.37 for the win. Jessika Craig took second in 2:11.26, while Roy L'Ecuyer placed third in 2:11.59. <\/p>\n
Russell returned in the men's 100 free with a swift time of 47.94. That effort missed his own CIS record of 47.23 set last year. Dominique Massie-Martel placed second in 49.21, while Gow earned a second podium with a 49.29. Morningstar had her own near miss in the women's 100 free. She clocked a 54.21 for the win, just off her CIS record of 54.03 from last year. Saumur turned in a second-place 54.71, while Mitchell picked up third in 55.18. <\/p>\n
Ford turned his 200 back silver into 200 IM gold with a 2:00.47. He smoked Colin Miazga in the final 50 meters, 28.09 to 29.05, for the win. Miazga settled for second in 2:00.67 after building a half-second lead through 150 meters. Steven Bielby finished third in 2:01.11. Morningstar doubled up with a 2:11.57 in the women's 200 IM. Hanna Pierse finished second in 2:13.92, while Jessica Johnson placed third in 2:15.84. <\/p>\n
Bielby captured the men's 1500 free crown in 15:18.09 after taking third in the 200 IM. Julie Sauvage touched second in 15:22.86, while Craig Dagnall grabbed third in 15:30.09.
