STANFORD, California, February 20. LED by its relay teams, Stanford (7-1, 3-1 Pac-10) prevented a near upset at home as the No. 2-ranked men defeated No. 4 Cal (5-2, 2-2 Pac-10) in a 123.5-119.5 thriller at Avery Aquatic Center in the final dual meet of the season.<\/p>\n
Going into the final event, the 400 Free Relay, Cal trailed Stanford by only nine points after Sean Mahoney’s close win over junior John Criste in the 200 breaststroke. The Golden Bears, led by Mahoney and Nathan Adrian, the American record holder in the 50 and 100 free had kept it close the entire meet.<\/p>\n
Although Stanford’s A team led through most of the race, Adrian pulled Cal ahead for good on the anchor leg, placing the outcome of the meet in the race for third place. Andrew Saeta, Jake Allen, Rob Andrews, and Geoff Cheah combined to finish the relay in third with a time of 3:01.80, nearly a half second in front of Cal for the team’s fifth dual win over the Bears.<\/p>\n
Chad La Tourette, Michael Zoldos, Trevor Scheid, and Scott Korotkin helped propel Stanford to an early lead finishing 1-4 in the 1000 freestyle. Zoldos went on to win the 500 yard freestyle (4:28.84) by just over a tenth of a second over La Tourette (4:28.95) in another 1-4 finish along with David Mosko and Scheid.<\/p>\n
Eugene Godsoe again dominated the backstroke competitions, winning the 200 back and having the Cardinal’s fastest 400 individual medley mark (46.93). Godsoe’s time in the 200 back (1:44.37) was an NCAA “B” standard mark.<\/p>\n
David Dunford closed out his home career with a strong finish in the 50 (20.12) and 100 free (44.11). Both times were NCAA “B” standard times.<\/p>\n
Stanford’s diving effort was led by junior Brent Eichenseer, as senior All-American Dwight Dumais continued to nurse a shoulder injury and was unavailable. Eichenseer again set a career best 341.70 to win the one-meter while taking the three-meter title as well, 18 needed points for the Cardinal.<\/p>\n
Stanford now prepares for the Pac-10 Championships, with the divers heading to Federal Way, WA this week while the rest of the team will travel to Long Beach, CA starting March 3.<\/p>\n
