After all, Haas&#8217; performance in the 200 free at the men&#8217;s NCAA championships this past March broke the oldest men&#8217;s U.S. Open record in existence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dbxOsOcdezA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Haas, swimming for the University of Texas, won the event in 1:30.46, demolishing\u00a0<strong>Simon Burnett&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>decade-old U.S. Open record of 1:31.20 and also\u00a0<strong>Ricky Berens&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>American record of 1:31.31, which the former Longhorn set back in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Haas had split a 1:30.52 on Texas&#8217; 800 free relay on the first night of the meet (the fastest split in history) and also won the NCAA title 500 free in 4:09.00. The freshmen helped the Longhorns win a second-straight NCAA team championship.<\/p>\n<p>Haas went on to make the U.S. Olympic team a few months later. He finished fifth in the 200 free in Rio and also contributed to a gold medal in the men&#8217;s 800 free relay.
