{"id":234122,"date":"2016-12-19T14:46:35","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T21:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=234122"},"modified":"2016-12-19T14:46:35","modified_gmt":"2016-12-19T21:46:35","slug":"open-water-highlights-of-2016-correction-to-original-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/open-water-highlights-of-2016-correction-to-original-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Water Highlights of 2016 &#8212; Correction to Original Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the November 2016 issue of\u00a0<em>Swimming World Magazine<\/em>, an article entitled &#8220;Memorable Open Water Highlights of 2016&#8221; detailed the controversy at the finish of the men&#8217;s 10k race at the Olympics in Rio.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Great Britain\u2019s <strong>Jack Burnell<\/strong> touched third, apparently for the bronze, but he was disqualified after he knocked Tunisia\u2019s <strong>Ous Mellouli\u2019s<\/strong> arm away after Mellouli grabbed his leg. Both men earned yellow cards for the infraction, but the violation was Burnell\u2019s second, and so he was done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">After the race, a furious Burnell blamed Mellouli for the loss of his medal, and no one could figure out exactly what he had done to earn his first penalty of the race.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the weeks since publication,\u00a0<strong>Sid Cassidy<\/strong>, the head referee from the event, informed\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em> that the account of the finish was incorrect.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Burnell earned a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">red card<\/span> for turning around and punching another swimmer in the head warranting an immediate ejection. Whether or not this was caused by interference does not have a bearing on the disqualification.
