Only <strong>Richard<\/strong> Quick has won more overall team titles with 13 (12 women\u2019s\u2014seven at Stanford and five at Texas\u2014plus one men\u2019s at Auburn).<\/p>\n<p>The win was cemented on, perhaps, the greatest evening in college swimming history, as American and U.S. Open records were broken in four straight events: by Cal\u2019s <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-murphy-crashes-136-barrier-with-135-73-ncaa-american-record-in-200-back\/\" target=\"_blank\">men\u2019s 200 back<\/a>, Florida\u2019s <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-unleashes-4046-ncaa-american-record-100-free\/\" target=\"_blank\">men\u2019s 100 free<\/a>, Texas\u2019 <strong>Will Licon<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/will-licon-scorches-200-breast-in-148-12-for-ncaa-american-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">men\u2019s 200 breast<\/a> and Texas teammates <strong>Joseph Schooling<\/strong> (U.S. Open) and <strong>Jack Conger<\/strong> (American) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/137-97-joseph-schooling-breaks-138-barrier-in-200-fly-for-ncaa-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">men\u2019s 200 fly<\/a>. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the day after the Olympic swimming competition had ended in Rio, <strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong> told reporters that he and three teammates, <strong>Gunnar Bentz<\/strong>, <strong>Jack<\/strong> <strong>Conger<\/strong> and <strong>Jimmy<\/strong> <strong>Feigen<\/strong>, had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usoc-statement-confirms-ryan-lochte-three-others-robbed-at-gunpoint\/\" target=\"_blank\">robbed at gunpoint the night before<\/a>. But after Lochte and Feigen filed a crime report, the Rio police investigated and announced that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/reports-ryan-lochte-fabricated-robbery-story\/\" target=\"_blank\">the entire story was fabricated<\/a> and that the four Americans had actually vandalized a gas station.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0the details about the altercation remain hazy, the four definitely were involved in a drunken incident with off-duty police officers around 6 a.m. local time. For their roles in the incident, USA Swimming and the U.S. Olympic Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/suspensions-for-lochte-feigen-bentz-conger-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\">suspended Lochte for 10 months<\/a> and banned him from the 2017 World Championship team. But that was only part of the story for <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> in 2016: his then-fianc\u00e9e <strong>Nicole Johnson<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-nicole-johnson-welcome-baby-boomer-robert-phelps\/\" target=\"_blank\">gave birth to a son, <strong>Boomer<\/strong>, in May<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-and-nicole-johnson-secretly-married-in-june\/\" target=\"_blank\">were married in mid-June<\/a>. However, 2016 might have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/emotional-journey-for-katie-ledecky-ends-in-rio\/\" target=\"_blank\">her most remarkable year yet<\/a>. At the Rio Olympics, she became just the second woman in history to win the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle events after <strong>Debbie Meyer<\/strong> pulled off that feat in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky crushed the field with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-smashes-400-free-world-record-earns-first-gold-medal-for-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\">world records in both the 400<\/a> and 800 free while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-claims-victory-in-200-free-adds-second-individual-gold-medal\/\" target=\"_blank\">winning a tight duel<\/a> with Sweden\u2019s <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> in the 200. Several Russian athletes, including seven swimmers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-officially-pulls-yulia-efimova-six-other-russians-from-rio-games-in-accordance-with-ioc-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\">were suspended from the Games<\/a>, but all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lobintsev-morozov-cleared-for-competition-at-rio-olympics-by-ioc-and-cas\/\" target=\"_blank\">were allowed back in on appeal<\/a>, including breaststroker <strong>Yulia Efimova,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/multiple-reports-lead-to-final-conclusion-yuliya-efimova-to-compete-in-rio-olympic-games-pending-ioc-confirmation\/\" target=\"_blank\">who received clearance to compete <em>during <\/em>the Opening Ceremony<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Efimova, a medal favorite in the women\u2019s breaststroke events, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/finger-wagging-lilly-king-stoking-rivalry-with-yulia-efimova\/\" target=\"_blank\">went on to clash<\/a> with American <strong>Lilly<\/strong> <strong>King<\/strong>, who accused her rival of doping and argued that Efimova should not even be competing in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>And King was not the only athlete to call out her competition for doping. Australia\u2019s <strong>Mack Horton<\/strong> referred to China\u2019s <strong>Sun Yang<\/strong> as a drug cheat before the two squared off in the men\u2019s 400 free, and <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lilly-king-michael-phelps-speak-loudly-on-doping-at-the-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\">called it \u201csad\u201d<\/a> that those with previous doping offenses were competing in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, it was revealed that China\u2019s <strong>Chen<\/strong> <strong>Xinyi<\/strong>, the fourth-place finisher in the women\u2019s 100 fly, had tested positive for a banned substance.
