BAKERSFIELD, California, February 12. WHILE the rumor mill has had Cal State Bakersfield's swimming program on the ropes due to severe budget cuts in the state, the teams dodged the headsman's axe during the latest program cuts at the university.<\/p>\n
Today, CSUB announced that men's and women's golf, tennis and wrestling have been eliminated effective the 2010-11 academic year. The rest of the department is looking at some serious budget cuts, but will remain in play.<\/p>\n
According to CSUB's head women's coach Pat Skeehan, in an e-mail sent to Swimming World<\/i>, the school is now at the minimum number of men's sports allowed to remain as a Division I institution. Additionally, the women's sports are at the lowest number to still meet Title IX requirements. <\/p>\n
Effectively, CSUB has now trimmed as much of its department down as it can and still remain a Division I institution at the NCAA level. That's a big sign of relief for the rest of the teams.<\/p>\n
Skeehan stated that the issues surrounding the potential cut helped the team become much stronger financially. The team has created long term programs, and has re-energized its supporters.<\/p>\n
