{"id":233541,"date":"2016-12-14T11:04:24","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T18:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=233541"},"modified":"2016-12-14T11:04:24","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T18:04:24","slug":"lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-ryan-hoffers-50-freestyle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-ryan-hoffers-50-freestyle\/","title":{"rendered":"LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Ryan Hoffer\u2019s 50 Freestyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week featured a bevy of NAG and world records come down between the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships and Winter Junior Nationals, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/regan-smith-rewrites-13-14-nag-record-board-in-back-and-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impressive NAG records from <\/span><b>Regan Smith <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 100 back and 100 fly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chad-le-clos-flies-to-100-fly-scm-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a short course world record for <\/span><b>Chad le Clos<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while those performances deserve recognition, this week\u2019s performance of the week goes to <\/span><b>Ryan Hoffer<\/b>,<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who blew away the field in the 50 freestyle at the US Winter Junior Nationals West meet with a time that continues to raise the expectations for the young swimmer as he heads toward college.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Performance of the Week -- 12\/14\/16\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YSQs2tTUD4A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representing Scottsdale Aquatic Club, Hoffer busted through the 19 second barrier in prelims, posting a 18.88 to beat his old personal best of 19.06 from this meet last year. He lowered that again in finals, touching in 18.71 to take almost two tenths off his morning swim and tie the pool record held by none other than <\/span><b>Nathan Adrian<\/b>.<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That swim also made Hoffer just the second high schooler to ever break 19.0, the only other being Florida junior <\/span><b>Caeleb Dressel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who also holds the 17-18 NAG record with a 18.67. Hoffer will still have time to gun for that record at a meet in the spring, as he doesn\u2019t age up until July. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the time itself is impressive enough, what is may be more exciting is the implications it has for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/1-ranked-recruit-ryan-hoffer-picks-california\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young swimmer\u2019s future career at Cal Berkley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under head coach <\/span><b>Dave Durden<\/b>.<b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoffer\u2019s time is only .05 off of the Cal school record, a mark also held by Adrian, and which should have huge implications for Cal\u2019s relays in the next four years. Hoffer is also only .15 off of Adrian\u2019s Cal record in the 100 free with his lifetime best of 41.23, which stands as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-performance-of-the-week-flashback-to-ryan-hoffers-100-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the current 17-18 NAG record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the event from this meet last year. To have a freshman coming in with that kind of impact in the sprint events is unheard of and should help keep Cal in contention for a National Championship in the years to come.
