SYDNEY, Australia, February 12. THE first day of long course meter action at the NSW Open Championships held in Australia featured some quick swimming with a month left until the Australian Trials.<\/p>\n
Korea's Tae Hwan Park cruised in the men's 400 free to open up the first night of finals. He clocked a 3:45.03 for the win, while Robert Hurley placed second in 3:49.78. Ryan Napoleon completed the top three in 3:51.42, just holding off Ryan Cochrane's fourth-place 3:51.59. Park then rattled his Korean record in the men's 100 free with a 49.45. That performance finished just off his 49.32 set in 2007. Tommaso D'Orsogna placed second in 49.80, while Cameron Prosser finished third in 49.90.<\/p>\n
Sweden's Therese Alshammar dominated the women's 50 fly with a 25.60, just a half-second behind her world record time of 25.07 set last year. Emily Seebohm finished well behind with a second-place 26.58, while Felicity Galvez took third in 26.87. Seebohm returned the favor in the women's 100 free with a 55.39 to 55.44 victory over Alshammar. Alicia Coutts finished third in 55.67.<\/p>\n
Leisel Jones put her Australian record in the women's 100 breast on notice heading into Trials next month with a sterling time of 1:05.85. That swim closed to within a second of her 1:05.09 national record set back in 2006. Sarah Katsoulis took second in 1:08.18, while Samantha Marshall placed third in 1:09.24.<\/p>\n
Brenton Rickard topped the men's 50 breast with a touch-out triumph over Glenn Snyders, 28.51 to 285.9. Brad Morrison earned third in 28.76. Stephanie Rice checked in with a 4:40.37 to win the women's 400 IM. Samantha Hamill placed second in 4:41.28, while Natalie Wiegersma claimed third in 4:41.37.<\/p>\n
Belinda Hocking eased through the women's 200 back with a winning time of 2:08.36, while Meagen Nay placed second in 2:10.31. Melissa Ingram finished third in 2:11.23. Daniel Arnamnart touched first in the men's 50 back with a 25.23, while Hayden Stoeckel placed second in 25.54. Ashley Delaney grabbed third in 25.62. <\/p>\n
Nick D'Arcy rang up a 1:56.82 in the men's 200 fly for the win, while Chris Wright touched a distant second in 1:59.54. Calum Timms rounded out the top three in 2:00.08.<\/p>\n
In relay action, Samantha Bennett, Jones, Ellese Zalewski and Shayne Reese won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:11.64. Travis Mahoney, Jack Laidler, Sam Ashby and Jeremy Saunders captured the men's 400 medley relay in 3:52.98.<\/p>\n
