Teammates\u00a0<strong>Gregory Tarasevich<\/strong> (23.80),\u00a0<strong>Oleg Kostin\u00a0<\/strong>(26.03),\u00a0<strong>Daniil Pakhomov\u00a0<\/strong>(22.40), and\u00a0<strong>Aleksei Brianskii\u00a0<\/strong>(21.02) posted a combined time of 1:33.25 to snag lane four for tonight&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.48),\u00a0<strong>Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> (25.92),\u00a0<strong>Yauhen Tsurkin\u00a0<\/strong>(22.67), and\u00a0<strong>Anton Latkin\u00a0<\/strong>(21.57) turned in a combined time of 1:33.48 for the second place seed.<\/p>\n<p>China was represented in prelims by athletes\u00a0<strong>Xu Jiayu\u00a0<\/strong>(23.46),\u00a0<strong>Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>(26.11),\u00a0<strong>Li Zhuhao\u00a0<\/strong>(22.93), and\u00a0<strong>Yu Hexin<\/strong> (21.45) picked up the third place seed with a time of 1:33.95.<\/p>\n<p>Japan grabbed fourth with a time of 1:34.01, followed by Australia and their time of 1:34.24.<\/p>\n<p>The USA (1:34.26), Lithuania (1:34.30), and Sweden (1:35.02) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<p>While Canada&#8217;s relay team did not make the finals heat for tonight, they did post a new Canadian record with a time of 1:37.89. The previous record was a 1:38.05 from the 2009 Canada Games. The new record was set by teammates\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Bagshaw<\/strong> (25.27),\u00a0<strong>Jason Block\u00a0<\/strong>(26.66),\u00a0<strong>MacKenzie Darragh\u00a0<\/strong>(23.91), and <strong>Florent Richard\u00a0<\/strong>(22.05).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 IM:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary set herself up for a sweep of the individual medleys with a top showing in the women&#8217;s 200 individual medley prelims. Hosszu powered to a 2:05.33 showing, qualifying more than a second ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The USA picked up both the second and third place seeds as\u00a0<strong>Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>posted times of 2:06.72 and 2:07.65 respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miho Teramura\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in prelims with a time of 2:08.14, while teammate\u00a0<strong>Yui Ohashi\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed fifth with a 2:08.24.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.30), Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zsuzsanna Jakabos<\/strong> (2:08.46), and Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Darcel<\/strong> (2:08.84) rounded out the top qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400 IM:<\/h3>\n<p>Four countries split the top eight qualifying spots in prelims of the men&#8217;s 400 individual medley. Great Britain, the USA, Hungary, and Japan will send two athletes each to the finals led by\u00a0<strong>Max Litchfield<\/strong> of Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Litchfield cruised ahead of the competition in heat three of five to finish with the fastest time of the morning &#8211; 4:03.56.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David Verraszto\u00a0<\/strong>and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Josh Prenot<\/strong> kept pace with each other throughout the majority of heat five, finishing with times of 4:04.08 and 4:04.43 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow American\u00a0<strong>Abrahm Devine<\/strong> picked up a close fourth place seed with a time of 4:04.64, followed closely by Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gergely Gyurta&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>4:04.88.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese duo of\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Takeharu Fujimori\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the sixth and seventh place seeds respectively with times of 4:05.00 and 4:05.83.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mark Szarenek\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the top eight qualifiers with a qualifying time of 4:06.07 from heat one.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Fly:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> of the USA flew to the top seed in the women&#8217;s 100 fly prelims with a time of 56.11. Worrell held a smooth stroke throughout all four lengths of the race to flirt with the notion of a sub-56 second swim. Currently Worrell is the American Record holder in the event with a 55.42 from 2015&#8217;s Duel in the Pool.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katerine Savard<\/strong> picked up the second place seed to the pleasure of the crowd. Savard and Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong> raced to the finish, but it was Savard who touched first with the roar of the crowd behind her. She finished with a 56.75 over Ikee&#8217;s 56.83.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary turned in a 56.99 for the fourth place seed, followed by Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daiene Dias&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>57.17.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Gibson<\/strong> (57.20), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> (57.56), and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Washer<\/strong> (57.62) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>(57.66), the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Kim Busch\u00a0<\/strong>(57.79), Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lucie Svecena<\/strong> (57.91), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Asuka Kobayashi\u00a0<\/strong>(57.96), Hong Kong&#8217;s <strong>Hang Yu Sze\u00a0<\/strong>(58.02), France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marie Wattel\u00a0<\/strong>(58.06),\u00a0Hong Kong&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kin Lok Chan\u00a0<\/strong>(58.16), and Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maria Ugolkova<\/strong> (58.20) rounded out the top sixteen.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Free:<\/h3>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 100 free prelims saw a total of 145 athletes competing in sixteen heats for the top sixteen spots going into tonight&#8217;s semi-finals.\u00a0<strong>Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA turned in the fastest time of the morning with a 46.76 showing from heat fifteen to return as the top seed in tonight&#8217;s semis.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yuri Kisil\u00a0<\/strong>picked up a close second lace seed with a time of 46.79 to be the only other athlete beneath the 47-second mark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mehdy Metella<\/strong> of France turned in a 47.13 to return as third, while Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Park Tae Hwan\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in prelims with a 47.19.<\/p>\n<p>Recent bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Simonas Bilis<\/strong> of Lithuania finished fifth in prelims with a time of 47.39, followed by close qualifying times from Croatia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mislav Sever\u00a0<\/strong>(47.43) and Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(47.48).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clement Mignon\u00a0<\/strong>of France was eighth in prelims with a time of 47.53.<\/p>\n<p>Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matias Koski<\/strong> (47.55), Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tommaso D&#8217;Orsogna<\/strong> (47.57), USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Chadwick<\/strong> (47.60), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Shinri Shioura<\/strong> (47.68), Algeria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Oussama Sahnoune<\/strong> (47.70), Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luca Dotto<\/strong> (47.72), Paraguay&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Benjamin Hockin<\/strong> (47.78), and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nikita Lobintsev<\/strong> (47.78) also qualified for semi-finals.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Free:<\/h3>\n<p>Fresh off a gold medal in the women&#8217;s 50 fly,\u00a0<strong>Jeanette Ottesen\u00a0<\/strong>of Denmark posted the fastest qualifying time in prelims of the women&#8217;s 50 fly by the smallest of margins. Ottesen turned in a time of 24.03 for the first place seed, followed closely by Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michelle Williams<\/strong> and her time of 24.04.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Erika Ferraioli<\/strong> and the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>posted matching times of 24.11 from heats 12 and 13 to return tied for the third place seed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Silvia di Pietro\u00a0<\/strong>of Italy grabbed the fifth place seed wit ha 24.21, just ahead of China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhu Menghui<\/strong> (24.30) and Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> (24.31).<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brittany Elmslie\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the top eight qualifiers with a 24.33.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anna Santamans<\/strong> (24.34), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> (24.35), France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Melanie Henique<\/strong> (24.42), the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Madison Kennedy<\/strong> (24.49), Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>(24.49), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong> (24.49), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rozaliya Nasretdinova<\/strong> (24.56), and Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Susann Bjornsen<\/strong> (24.60) return as the ninth through sixteenth qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Breast:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia turned in the top time of the morning in prelims of the men&#8217;s 50 breaststroke. Prigoda stopped the clock at a 26.23, just ahead of Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felipe Lima&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>26.26.<\/p>\n<p>Slovakia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Peter Stevens<\/strong> turned in a qualifying time of 26.33, followed closely by the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>and his time of 26.34. Miller&#8217;s qualifying time puts him a shy .06 seconds off the American Record of 26.28 set in 2002 by\u00a0<strong>Ed Moses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Felipe Franca Silva<\/strong> picked put the fifth place seed with a time of 26.44, while South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cameron van der Burgh\u00a0<\/strong>was sixth with a 26.55.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> of the USA and\u00a0<strong>Fabio Scozzoli\u00a0<\/strong>of Italy qualified seventh and eighth respectively with times of 26.56 and 26.57. Andrew&#8217;s time downs the World Junior Record of 26.67 set in 2015 by Turkey&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Huseyin Sakci<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Bealrus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ilya Shymanovich\u00a0<\/strong>(26.58), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Oleg Kostin\u00a0<\/strong>(26.61), Venezuela&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carlos Claverie<\/strong> (26.64), Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Johannes Skagius<\/strong> (26.65), South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Giulio Zorzi<\/strong> (26.67), Paraguay&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Renato Prono<\/strong> (26.68), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yan Zibei<\/strong> (26.75), and Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrei Tuomola<\/strong> (26.77) completed the top sixteen qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 4&#215;200 Free Relay:<\/h3>\n<p>The women of the USA charged ahead of the competition in prelims of the women&#8217;s 800 freestyle relay. Teammates\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.63),\u00a0<strong>Sarah Gibson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.46),\u00a0<strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong> (1:56.18), and\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> (1:54.98) posted a qualifying time of 7:41.25, finishing a full five seconds ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s <strong>Zhang Yuhan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.06),\u00a0<strong>Ai Yanhan<\/strong> (1:56.65),\u00a0<strong>Dong Jie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.44), and\u00a0<strong>Shen Duo\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.10)\u00a0delivered the second place qualifying time of 7:46.25, followed closely by Canada and their time of 7:46.33. Canada was represented in the relay by\u00a0<strong>Kennedy Goss<\/strong> (1:55.97),\u00a0<strong>Alexia Zevnik\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.87),\u00a0<strong>Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.79), and\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.70).<\/p>\n<p>The Russian Federation picked up the fourth place seed with a 7:46.39, followed by Japan&#8217;s 7:47.47.<\/p>\n<p>Australia (7:48.61), Germany (7:50.67), and Denmark (7:51.76) return as sixth through eighth respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 1500 Free:<\/h3>\n<p>Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> of cruised ahead of the competition in prelims of the men&#8217;s 1500 freestyle, qualifying first with a time of 14:24.39. Paltrinieri is the current world and championship record holder with times of 14:08.06 (2015) and 14:16.10 (2014) respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Park Tae Hwan<\/strong> picked up the second place seed with a qualifying time of 14:30.14 from heat three of five, while Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anton Ipsen\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 14:30.92 for third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wojciech Wojdak\u00a0<\/strong>of Poland grabbed the fourth place seed with a qualifying time of 14:31.06, followed by Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henrik Christiansen&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>14:33.13.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nicholas &#8220;True&#8221; Sweetser<\/strong> (14:34.05), Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gabriele Detti\u00a0<\/strong>(14:34.11), and Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gergely Gyurta<\/strong> (14:38.07) return as the sixth through eighth place seeds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read below to catch up on all the action from day five prelims of the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships.
