Men’s 4×50 Medley Relay:<\/h3>\n
The men of the Russian Federation continued to throw down fast relay times as they topped the preliminary heats of the men’s 4×50 medley relay. Teammates\u00a0Gregory Tarasevich<\/strong> (23.80),\u00a0Oleg Kostin\u00a0<\/strong>(26.03),\u00a0Daniil Pakhomov\u00a0<\/strong>(22.40), and\u00a0Aleksei Brianskii\u00a0<\/strong>(21.02) posted a combined time of 1:33.25 to snag lane four for tonight’s final.<\/p>\nBelarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.48),\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> (25.92),\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin\u00a0<\/strong>(22.67), and\u00a0Anton Latkin\u00a0<\/strong>(21.57) turned in a combined time of 1:33.48 for the second place seed.<\/p>\nChina was represented in prelims by athletes\u00a0Xu Jiayu\u00a0<\/strong>(23.46),\u00a0Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>(26.11),\u00a0Li Zhuhao\u00a0<\/strong>(22.93), and\u00a0Yu Hexin<\/strong> (21.45) picked up the third place seed with a time of 1:33.95.<\/p>\nJapan grabbed fourth with a time of 1:34.01, followed by Australia and their time of 1:34.24.<\/p>\n
The USA (1:34.26), Lithuania (1:34.30), and Sweden (1:35.02) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n
While Canada’s relay team did not make the finals heat for tonight, they did post a new Canadian record with a time of 1:37.89. The previous record was a 1:38.05 from the 2009 Canada Games. The new record was set by teammates\u00a0Jeremy Bagshaw<\/strong> (25.27),\u00a0Jason Block\u00a0<\/strong>(26.66),\u00a0MacKenzie Darragh\u00a0<\/strong>(23.91), and Florent Richard\u00a0<\/strong>(22.05).<\/p>\nWomen’s 200 IM:<\/h3>\n
Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary set herself up for a sweep of the individual medleys with a top showing in the women’s 200 individual medley prelims. Hosszu powered to a 2:05.33 showing, qualifying more than a second ahead of the competition.<\/p>\nThe USA picked up both the second and third place seeds as\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>posted times of 2:06.72 and 2:07.65 respectively.<\/p>\nMiho Teramura\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in prelims with a time of 2:08.14, while teammate\u00a0Yui Ohashi\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed fifth with a 2:08.24.<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.30), Hungary’s\u00a0Zsuzsanna Jakabos<\/strong> (2:08.46), and Canada’s\u00a0Sarah Darcel<\/strong> (2:08.84) rounded out the top qualifiers.<\/p>\nMen’s 400 IM:<\/h3>\n
Four countries split the top eight qualifying spots in prelims of the men’s 400 individual medley. Great Britain, the USA, Hungary, and Japan will send two athletes each to the finals led by\u00a0Max Litchfield<\/strong> of Great Britain.<\/p>\nLitchfield cruised ahead of the competition in heat three of five to finish with the fastest time of the morning – 4:03.56.<\/p>\n
Hungary’s\u00a0David Verraszto\u00a0<\/strong>and the USA’s\u00a0Josh Prenot<\/strong> kept pace with each other throughout the majority of heat five, finishing with times of 4:04.08 and 4:04.43 respectively.<\/p>\nFellow American\u00a0Abrahm Devine<\/strong> picked up a close fourth place seed with a time of 4:04.64, followed closely by Hungary’s\u00a0Gergely Gyurta’s\u00a0<\/strong>4:04.88.<\/p>\nThe Japanese duo of\u00a0Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Takeharu Fujimori\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the sixth and seventh place seeds respectively with times of 4:05.00 and 4:05.83.<\/p>\nGreat Britain’s\u00a0Mark Szarenek\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the top eight qualifiers with a qualifying time of 4:06.07 from heat one.<\/p>\nWomen’s 100 Fly:<\/h3>\n
Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> of the USA flew to the top seed in the women’s 100 fly prelims with a time of 56.11. Worrell held a smooth stroke throughout all four lengths of the race to flirt with the notion of a sub-56 second swim. Currently Worrell is the American Record holder in the event with a 55.42 from 2015’s Duel in the Pool.<\/p>\nCanada’s\u00a0Katerine Savard<\/strong> picked up the second place seed to the pleasure of the crowd. Savard and Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee<\/strong> raced to the finish, but it was Savard who touched first with the roar of the crowd behind her. She finished with a 56.75 over Ikee’s 56.83.<\/p>\nKatinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary turned in a 56.99 for the fourth place seed, followed by Brazil’s\u00a0Daiene Dias’\u00a0<\/strong>57.17.<\/p>\nThe USA’s\u00a0Sarah Gibson<\/strong> (57.20), Russia’s\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> (57.56), and Australia’s\u00a0Emily Washer<\/strong> (57.62) completed the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\nDenmark’s\u00a0Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>(57.66), the Netherlands’\u00a0Kim Busch\u00a0<\/strong>(57.79), Czech Republic’s\u00a0Lucie Svecena<\/strong> (57.91), Japan’s\u00a0Asuka Kobayashi\u00a0<\/strong>(57.96), Hong Kong’s Hang Yu Sze\u00a0<\/strong>(58.02), France’s\u00a0Marie Wattel\u00a0<\/strong>(58.06),\u00a0Hong Kong’s\u00a0Kin Lok Chan\u00a0<\/strong>(58.16), and Switzerland’s\u00a0Maria Ugolkova<\/strong> (58.20) rounded out the top sixteen.<\/p>\nMen’s 100 Free:<\/h3>\n
The men’s 100 free prelims saw a total of 145 athletes competing in sixteen heats for the top sixteen spots going into tonight’s semi-finals.\u00a0Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA turned in the fastest time of the morning with a 46.76 showing from heat fifteen to return as the top seed in tonight’s semis.<\/p>\nCanada’s\u00a0Yuri Kisil\u00a0<\/strong>picked up a close second lace seed with a time of 46.79 to be the only other athlete beneath the 47-second mark.<\/p>\nMehdy Metella<\/strong> of France turned in a 47.13 to return as third, while Korea’s\u00a0Park Tae Hwan\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in prelims with a 47.19.<\/p>\nRecent bronze medalist\u00a0Simonas Bilis<\/strong> of Lithuania finished fifth in prelims with a time of 47.39, followed by close qualifying times from Croatia’s\u00a0Mislav Sever\u00a0<\/strong>(47.43) and Germany’s\u00a0Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>(47.48).<\/p>\nClement Mignon\u00a0<\/strong>of France was eighth in prelims with a time of 47.53.<\/p>\nFinland’s\u00a0Matias Koski<\/strong> (47.55), Australia’s\u00a0Tommaso D’Orsogna<\/strong> (47.57), USA’s\u00a0Michael Chadwick<\/strong> (47.60), Japan’s\u00a0Shinri Shioura<\/strong> (47.68), Algeria’s\u00a0Oussama Sahnoune<\/strong> (47.70), Italy’s\u00a0Luca Dotto<\/strong> (47.72), Paraguay’s\u00a0Benjamin Hockin<\/strong> (47.78), and Russia’s\u00a0Nikita Lobintsev<\/strong> (47.78) also qualified for semi-finals.<\/p>\nWomen’s 50 Free:<\/h3>\n
Fresh off a gold medal in the women’s 50 fly,\u00a0Jeanette Ottesen\u00a0<\/strong>of Denmark posted the fastest qualifying time in prelims of the women’s 50 fly by the smallest of margins. Ottesen turned in a time of 24.03 for the first place seed, followed closely by Canada’s\u00a0Michelle Williams<\/strong> and her time of 24.04.<\/p>\nItaly’s\u00a0Erika Ferraioli<\/strong> and the Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>posted matching times of 24.11 from heats 12 and 13 to return tied for the third place seed.<\/p>\nSilvia di Pietro\u00a0<\/strong>of Italy grabbed the fifth place seed wit ha 24.21, just ahead of China’s\u00a0Zhu Menghui<\/strong> (24.30) and Brazil’s\u00a0Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> (24.31).<\/p>\nAustralia’s\u00a0Brittany Elmslie\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the top eight qualifiers with a 24.33.<\/p>\nFrance’s\u00a0Anna Santamans<\/strong> (24.34), Canada’s\u00a0Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> (24.35), France’s\u00a0Melanie Henique<\/strong> (24.42), the USA’s\u00a0Madison Kennedy<\/strong> (24.49), Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>(24.49), Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee<\/strong> (24.49), Russia’s\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova<\/strong> (24.56), and Norway’s\u00a0Susann Bjornsen<\/strong> (24.60) return as the ninth through sixteenth qualifiers.<\/p>\nMen’s 50 Breast:<\/h3>\n
Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia turned in the top time of the morning in prelims of the men’s 50 breaststroke. Prigoda stopped the clock at a 26.23, just ahead of Brazil’s\u00a0Felipe Lima’s\u00a0<\/strong>26.26.<\/p>\nSlovakia’s\u00a0Peter Stevens<\/strong> turned in a qualifying time of 26.33, followed closely by the USA’s\u00a0Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>and his time of 26.34. Miller’s qualifying time puts him a shy .06 seconds off the American Record of 26.28 set in 2002 by\u00a0Ed Moses<\/strong>.<\/p>\nFelipe Franca Silva<\/strong> picked put the fifth place seed with a time of 26.44, while South Africa’s\u00a0Cameron van der Burgh\u00a0<\/strong>was sixth with a 26.55.<\/p>\nMichael Andrew<\/strong> of the USA and\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli\u00a0<\/strong>of Italy qualified seventh and eighth respectively with times of 26.56 and 26.57. Teammates\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.63),\u00a0Sarah Gibson\u00a0<\/strong>(1:55.46),\u00a0Katie Drabot<\/strong> (1:56.18), and\u00a0Leah Smith<\/strong> (1:54.98) posted a qualifying time of 7:41.25, finishing a full five seconds ahead of the competition.<\/p>\nChina’s Zhang Yuhan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.06),\u00a0Ai Yanhan<\/strong> (1:56.65),\u00a0Dong Jie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.44), and\u00a0Shen Duo\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.10)\u00a0delivered the second place qualifying time of 7:46.25, followed closely by Canada and their time of 7:46.33.
