Additionally, Team USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong> swam to the top seeds in their respective events.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/sc-worlds-day-four-prelims-heat-sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Heat Sheets<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2016-fina-sc-world-championships-day-4-prelims-day-4-international-elite-2016-12-06.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Prelims Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 4&#215;50 Freestyle Relay<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Backstroke<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 50 Butterfly<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 400 Freestyle<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 4&#215;200 Freestyle Relay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hit refresh for the latest coverage.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 4&#215;50 Freestyle Relay:<\/h3>\n<p>The men of Team USA topped the preliminary heats of the men&#8217;s 4&#215;50 freestyle relay with a top qualifying time of 1:25.01.\u00a0<strong>Dillon Virva<\/strong> (21.55),\u00a0<strong>Michael Chadwick<\/strong> (20.81),\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> (21.51), and\u00a0<strong>Paul Powers<\/strong> (21.14) earned the USA lane four for tonight&#8217;s final where they will have a shot at the gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian Federation grabbed the second seed for tonight&#8217;s final with teammates\u00a0<strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> (22.10),\u00a0<strong>Aleksei Brianskii\u00a0<\/strong>(21.04),\u00a0<strong>Nikita Lobintsev<\/strong> (21.23), and\u00a0<strong>Aleksandr Popkov<\/strong> (20.96) posting a combined time of 1:25.33. Sprint freestyle ace\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Morozov<\/strong> did not swim the event this morning, but could very well anchor their relay for tonight.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome of\u00a0<strong>Kosuke Matsui<\/strong> (21.61),\u00a0<strong>Kenta Ito\u00a0<\/strong>(21.02),\u00a0<strong>Shinri Shioura<\/strong> (21.49), and\u00a0<strong>Junya Koga<\/strong> (21.39) picked up the third place seed for Japan with a qualifying time of 1:25.51.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands turned in a 1:26.20 for the fourth place seed, followed by South Africa and their time of 1:26.95.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus (1:27.02), France (1:27.43), and China (1:27.69) complete the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Back:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ali DeLoof<\/strong> of the USA topped the preliminary field of the women&#8217;s 50 backstroke with some outside smoke from lane zero of the final heat. DeLoof powered to a time of 26.25 to earn the top qualifying time.<\/p>\n<p>Aussie backstroker\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong> picked up the second place seed with a 26.43 from heat eight, just ahead of Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Etiene Medeiros&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>time of 26.48.<\/p>\n<p>Hometown favorite\u00a0<strong>Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a time of 26.57 for the fourth place seed, followed by a tie between Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daryna Zevina<\/strong> and the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Kira Toussaint<\/strong>. The two stopped the clock simultaneously at a 26.63 from heat eight.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the seventh place seed with a 26.70, while eighth went to Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Georgia Davies\u00a0<\/strong>and her time of 26.74.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mie Nielsen\u00a0<\/strong>(26.75),\u00a0Colombia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Isabella Arcila\u00a0<\/strong>(26.76), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> (26.82), Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Dawson\u00a0<\/strong>(26.84), the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Maaike de Waard<\/strong> (26.87), Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Simona Baumrtova<\/strong> (26.93), Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Silvia di Pietro\u00a0<\/strong>(26.95), and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wang Xueer\u00a0<\/strong>return as ninth through sixteenth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Fly:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Nicholas Santos<\/strong> of Brazil powered to the top qualifying time in prelims of the men&#8217;s 50 butterfly. Santos stopped the clock at a 22.53 to lead a tightly packed field into tonight&#8217;s semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Takeshi Kawamoto<\/strong> grabbed the second place seed with a time of 22.62, with the field narrowing behind him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aleksandr Popkov<\/strong> of Russia and\u00a0<strong>David Morgan\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia turned in close times of 22.68 and 22.69 respectively, from heats eleven and twelve.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Albert Subirats<\/strong> posted a 22.75 to qualify fifth out of heat nine, while Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Barrett<\/strong> picked up the sixth place seed with a 22.76.<\/p>\n<p>Medalists\u00a0<strong>Tom Shields<\/strong> of the USA and\u00a0<strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong> of South Africa earned the seventh and eighth place seeds respectively with times of 22.79 and 22.84.<\/p>\n<p>Trinidad and Tobago&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dylan Carter<\/strong> (22.85), Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Yauhen Tsurkin\u00a0<\/strong>(22.85), Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Danel Carranza<\/strong> (22.89), Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrii Khloptsov<\/strong> (23.01), Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrii Govorov<\/strong> (23.07), Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>(23.09), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniil Pakhomov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.19), and Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mindaugas Sadauskas<\/strong> (23.22) complete the top sixteen.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 Free:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> of the USA continued to flex her distance prowess with a top showing in prelims of the women&#8217;s 400 freestyle. Smith turned in a time of 4:00.47 to top the qualifying field and set herself up for another chance at a gold medal. She was one of only two swimmers to qualify from outside of the sixth and final heat.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the second place seed with the top time in the sixth and final heat of the 400. Popova held off the competition to qualify with a time of 4:01.11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chihiro Igarashi\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan turned in a time of 4:02.23 to grab the third place seed, followed by a close qualifying time of 4:02.38 from Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> posted a 4:03.54 to return as the fifth place seed, while\u00a0<strong>Sharon van Rouwendaal<\/strong> of the Netherlands finished sixth in prelims with a 4:04.07.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zhang Yuhan<\/strong> of China and\u00a0<strong>Aya Takano<\/strong> of Japan concluded the list of qualifiers with times of 4:04.49 and 4:04.89 respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Breast:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Lilly King<\/strong> of the USA blasted ahead of the competition in prelims of the women&#8217;s 100 breaststroke, setting herself apart from the competition with a time .71 seconds faster than the second place qualifier. King stopped the clock at a 1:04.05 from heat six of seven to return as the top seed for tonight&#8217;s semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> finished second in heat six behind King with a time of 1:04.76, earning her the second place seed for tonight&#8217;s semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>Co-world record holder and championship record holder\u00a0<strong>Alia Atkinson\u00a0<\/strong>of Jamaica picked up the third place seed with a time of 1:05.27, while Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Molly Renshaw<\/strong> posted a 1:05.44 for the fourth place seed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Molly Hannis\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA added her name to the top eight qualifiers with a time of 1:05.52, good for the fifth place seed.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Miho Teramura<\/strong> grabbed the sixth place seed with a time of 1:05.61, just ahead of Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Silja Kansakoski<\/strong> (1:05.67) and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chloe Tutton\u00a0<\/strong>(1:05.76).<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Misaki Sekiguchi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:05.78), Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jessica Hansen\u00a0<\/strong>(1:05.88), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Natalia Ivaneeva\u00a0<\/strong>(1:05.89), Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Martina Carraro\u00a0<\/strong>(1:05.93), Ireland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Fiona Doyle<\/strong> (1:05.95),\u00a0Iceland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hrafnhildur \u00a0Luthersdottir<\/strong> (1:06.06), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rachel Nicol\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.10), and Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kierra Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.18) qualified ninth through sixteenth for the semi-finals.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 4&#215;200 Free Relay:<\/h3>\n<p>The USA topped the second men&#8217;s preliminary relay heat with a qualifying time of 6:53.91. The group of\u00a0<strong>Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.37),\u00a0<strong>Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.89),\u00a0<strong>Pace Clark<\/strong> (1:44.05), and\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong> (1:42.60) earned the coveted spot in lane four for tonight&#8217;s finals.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Clyde Lewis<\/strong> (1:44.07),\u00a0<strong>Alexander Graham<\/strong> (1:43.39),\u00a0<strong>Daniel Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.97), and\u00a0<strong>Jack Gerrard<\/strong> (1:44.29) grabbed the second place seed with a combined time of 6:54.72, while Denmark&#8217;s foursome of\u00a0<strong>Sebastian Ovesen<\/strong> (1:43.93),\u00a0<strong>Daniel Skaaning<\/strong> (1:44.01),\u00a0<strong>Ander Lie Nielsen\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.64), and\u00a0<strong>Francs Johannessen\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.30) picked up third with a close 6:54.88.<\/p>\n<p>Japan and the Russian Federation posted close times of 6:57.49 and 6:57.74 to return as the fourth and fifth place seeds.<\/p>\n<p>China (6:58.03), the Netherlands (6:58.55), and Great Britain (7:01.03) qualified sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Day four prelims was a short morning, but was highlighted by top showings in both the men&#8217;s 200 and 800 freestyle relays by Team USA.
