Koch posted a new championship record time of 2:01.21 to finish well ahead of the competition. The previous championship record was a 2:01.35 set in 2012 by Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Gyurta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew Willis\u00a0<\/strong>of Great Britain led the battle for second with a time of 2:02.71, while Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mikhail Dorinov<\/strong>\u00a0took home bronze with a 2:03.09.<\/p>\n<p>The USA picked up fourth and fifth as\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Josh Prenot<\/strong>\u00a0posted times of 2:03.79 and 2:03.96 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Erik Persson<\/strong>\u00a0(2:04.83), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ilya Khomenko<\/strong>\u00a0(2:04.97), and Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yukihiro Takahashi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.40) concluded the heat.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p>The women of the 100 free final battled all the way to the wall for the top spot on the podium. The race came down to The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong>, Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brittany Elmslie<\/strong>, and Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>in the final 15-meters, with Elmslie grabbing the gold. Elmslie, a successful long course swimmer, picked up her first short course international medal with a 51.81 finish.<\/p>\n<p>Kromowidjojo added a silver medal to her collection with a 51.92 finish, while hometown favorite Oleksiak picked up a bronze medal with a 52.01 finish.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth overall with a time of 52.12, followed by Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>\u00a0and her time of 52.43.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sandrine Mainville<\/strong>\u00a0(52.52), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Veronika Popova<\/strong>\u00a0(52.53), and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zhu Menghui\u00a0<\/strong>(52.74) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 IM Semi-Final:<\/h3>\n<p>The Japanese duo of\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Shinri Shioura<\/strong>\u00a0delivered the top two times in semi-finals of the men&#8217;s 100 IM. Seto powered to a decisive finish in semi-final two to grab the top seed with a time of 52.09, while Shioura topped semi-final one with a 52.35.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong>\u00a0picked up the third place seed with a time of 52.41, just ahead of world record holder\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Morozov<\/strong>\u00a0of Russia (52.44).<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Philip Heintz<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed the fifth place seed with a 52.63, followed by China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wang Shun<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 52.73.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kyle Stolk\u00a0<\/strong>of The Netherlands and\u00a0<strong>Simon Sjodin<\/strong>\u00a0of Sweden qualified seventh and eighth with times of 52.87 and 52.88 respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 Back FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary posted a decisive victory in finals of the women&#8217;s 200 back, jumping to the lead within the first 50-meters of the race. Hosszu continued to build her lead as she finished with a 2:00.79, almost one and a half seconds ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daryna Zevina<\/strong>\u00a0held close to Hosszu&#8217;s feet to pick up the silver medal with a time of 2:02.24, while Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong>\u00a0powered to a bronze medal and a final time of 2:02.65.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hilary Caldwell\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada turned in a fourth place finish of 2:03.98, followed by Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Dawson<\/strong>\u00a0and her time of 2:04.09.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hellen Moffitt<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed sixth with a 2:04.56, just ahead of the Japanese duo of\u00a0<strong>Sayaka Akase\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.02) and\u00a0<strong>Miki Takahashi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:06.29).<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Free Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia maintained his post atop the leaderboard in the men&#8217;s splash and dash, topping the qualifying field with a time of 21.05.<\/p>\n<p>Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Simonas Bilis\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the second place seed for tomorrow&#8217;s final with a time of 21.15, while Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luca Dotto\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a 21.29 to return as third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clement Mignon\u00a0<\/strong>of France posted a 21.30 to grab a narrow fourth place seed over the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paul Powers<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 21.31.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jesse Puts<\/strong>\u00a0(21.33), Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ari-Pekka Liukkonen\u00a0<\/strong>(21.36), and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aleksei Brianskii<\/strong>\u00a0(21.44) qualified sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Fly Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p>After posting an American Record in prelims of the women&#8217;s 50 fly this morning, the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>continued to top the competition in semi-finals with a top showing of 25.18. Worrell&#8217;s time situates her in lane four for tomorrow night&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeanette Ottesen\u00a0<\/strong>of Denmark kept close to Worrell throughout the short duration of race, posting a time of 25.29 to pick up the second place seed going into tomorrow night&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Silvia di Pietro\u00a0<\/strong>turned in a third place qualifying time of 25.50, followed closely by The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Maaike de Waard<\/strong>\u00a0and her time of 25.59.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>posted a time of 25.63 to qualify\u00a0fifth\u00a0overall, while France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Melanie Henique\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the sixth place seed with a time of 25.66.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emilie Beckmann\u00a0<\/strong>of Denmark and\u00a0<strong>Katerine Savard\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada qualified seventh and eighth with strikingly similar times of 25.75 and 25.76.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Fly FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p>After what he refers to as a disappointing Olympics,\u00a0<strong>Chad le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa has rebounded in World Record style. The Olympic gold medalist flew ahead of the competition to take down his own World Record and Championship Record of 48.44 from the 2014 Doha edition of the Short Course World Championships. Le Clos&#8217; new record of 48.08 puts him closer to a sub-47 second SCM swim than anyone has ever been.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA grabbed the silver medal with a time of 49.04, while Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David Morgan\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the bronze with a time of 49.31. Morgan&#8217;s time is a new Australian record, taking down\u00a0<strong>Mitchell Patterson&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a049.51 from 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Barrett<\/strong>\u00a0slid to fourth with a time of 49.47, followed by France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mehdy Metella<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 50.16.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Takeshi Kawamoto<\/strong>\u00a0(50.37), France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>(50.53), and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tommaso D&#8217;Orsogna\u00a0<\/strong>(50.77) completed the finals heat.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 IM Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>of Hungary posted the top qualifying time in semi-finals of the women&#8217;s 100 individual medley, stopping the clock at a 57.53 to put her within a second of her championship record (56.70) and world record (56.67).<\/p>\n<p>Jamaica&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alia Atkinson<\/strong>\u00a0worked her breaststroke magic to pick up the second place seed with a time of 58.54 from semi-final two, finishing just ahead of Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>and her time of 58.96.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Marrit\u00a0<\/strong><b>Steenburgen<\/b>\u00a0turned in a time of 59.33 to return as the fourth place seed in tomorrow night&#8217;s final, while Finland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jenna Laukkanen\u00a0<\/strong>posted a qualifying time of 59.64 for fifth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA grabbed the sixth place seed with a time of \u00a059.67, followed by Austria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lena Kreundl&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>59.86.<\/p>\n<p>A possible swim-off is required to determine the eighth qualifier as Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Susann Bjornsen<\/strong>\u00a0and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong>\u00a0delivered matching times of 1:00.05 from semi-finals one and two.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Back Semi-Finals:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Junya Koga\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan smoked the competition in semi-finals of the men&#8217;s 50 backstroke, powering to the only sub-23 second swim of the evening. Koga stopped the clock at a 22.81 to not only claim the top seed going into tomorrow night&#8217;s final, but also moves up to fourth All-Time with a new Asian Record. The previous Asian Record was a 22.88, set by Koga himself in 2009 while swimming at a World Cup meet in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Pavel\u00a0Yankovich\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the second place seed with a time of 23.07, while France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>snagged third with a time of 23.16.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bobby Hurley\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia finished fourth in semi-finals with a time of 23.20, followed by Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Miguel Ortiz-Canavate<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 23.33.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Albert Subirats\u00a0<\/strong>(23.37), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Xu Jiayu<\/strong>\u00a0(23.39), and Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tomasz Polewka<\/strong>\u00a0(23.47) qualified as sixth through eighth respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 800 Free FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ashley Twichell\u00a0<\/strong>of Team USA jumped to an early lead in the women&#8217;s 800 free final and never looked back. The duo kept pace beneath the world record for the first 200 meters, before slipping off by the halfway point. That didn&#8217;t stop the duo from finishing well ahead of the competition as they earned Team USA&#8217;s first 1-2 finish of the Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Smith powered to first with a final time of 8:10.17, finishing just off her new American Record of 8:07<\/p>\n<p>Twichell stuck with Smith throughout the duration of the race, finishing second with a time of 8:11.95 &#8211; a personal best for her.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kiah Melverton\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>\u00a0held pace with each other for the third and fourth place spots with Melverton earning the spot on the podium with a time of 8:16.51. Titmus finished fourth overall with a final time of 8:17.95.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zhang Yuhan\u00a0<\/strong>of China turned in a time of 8:21.05 for fifth, followed by Argentina&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Delfina Pignatiello\u00a0<\/strong>and her time of 8:26.41.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Olivia Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>and Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0were seventh and eighth respectively with times of 8:30.16 and 8:36.76.<\/p>\n<h3>Mixed 4&#215;50 Medley Relay FINAL:<\/h3>\n<p>The mixed 4&#215;50 medley relay came down to the final 15-meters as Team USA and Brazil battled for the gold medal. A powerful 50 free leg from\u00a0<strong>Michael Chadwick\u00a0<\/strong>propelled Team USA ahead of the competition and to a new Championship Record of 1:37.22, taking that record back from Brazil who posted a 1:37.26 in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Shields<\/strong>\u00a0(23.45) switched from his usual butterfly to swim the backstroke leg for Team USA, giving\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong>\u00a0(28.74) and\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Worrell<\/strong>\u00a0(24.59) a solid start to the race. Chadwick had a bit of catching up to do as he moved Team USA from it&#8217;s position at seventh up to first with a split of 20.44.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s relay team of\u00a0<strong>Etiene Medeiros<\/strong>\u00a0(25.93),\u00a0<strong>Felipe Lima\u00a0<\/strong>(25.46),\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Santos<\/strong>\u00a0(21.93), and\u00a0<strong>Larissa Oliveira<\/strong>\u00a0(24.42)\u00a0\u00a0settled for second and a time of 1:37.74.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Junya Koga<\/strong>\u00a0(22.74),\u00a0<strong>Yoshiki Yamanaka\u00a0<\/strong>(26.48),\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong>\u00a0(24.89), and\u00a0<strong>Sayuki Ouchi\u00a0<\/strong>(24.34) turned in a combined time of 1:38.45 to earn bronze for Japan.<\/p>\n<p>China finished fourth overall with a time of 1:38.93, followed by Canada&#8217;s 1:38.98.<\/p>\n<p>Russia (1:39.11) and Sweden (1:40.51) posted sixth and seventh places respectively, while the Italian relay was disqualified.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everything you need to follow along live with day three finals of the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships.
