SHREVEPORT, Louisiana, January 30. THE TCU men's and women's swimming and diving team picked up a pair of wins of Centenary College, Saturday at the Haynes Fitness Center. Arkansas-Little Rock was slated for the meet, but could not travel due to inclement weather.<\/p>\n
"This was a good win for us," TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. "Centenary is really pretty solid and it was nice for us to come down here and swim the way that we did. I'm real proud of my team for getting the job done today."<\/p>\n
On the women's side, TCU won all 11 events, recording four new Haynes Fitness Center Pool records. The Frogs claimed new records in all three relays, taking the 200-medley relay (1:50.09), 200-free relay (1:39.14) and 400-free relay (3:36.55). Sophomore Ashley Bolin also garnered a new pool benchmark, winning the 400-IM with a clocking of 4:29.58.<\/p>\n
Newcomer Rachel Nash led the Frogs with a pair of individual titles, leading the way in the 100-free (54.14) and 200-free (1:56.49) to enjoy her first multi-win meet in her college career. Freshman Katie Scarsella took the 50-free with a time of 25.44 for her third win in as many meets since joining the TCU roster this month.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Megan Higginbotham also continues to roll in the 100-breast, winning with a time of 1:09.04. Higginbotham, a Cumming, Ga., product, swept the breaststroke events in the Frogs' previous win over North Texas on Jan. 22.<\/p>\n
Other individual winners for TCU include sophomore Jenny Oster in the 100-fly (58.94), junior Maria Paula Alvarez in the 500-free (5:12.43) and sophomore Zrinka Korac in the 100-back (1:00.99).<\/p>\n
The TCU men dominated 9 of the 11 events to advance to a 6-0 overall record this season, remaining as the lone undefeated team in the Mountain West Conference. Junior Edgar Peyro led the squad with a pair of wins, totaling victories in the 100-breast (58.78) and 400-IM (4:07.90). <\/p>\n
The men also tallied a pair of relay wins, stealing the 200-medley relay with the team of Laszlo Gyurko, Edgar Crespo, Friedrich Grott and Andrew Moore, crashing into the wall one one-hundredths faster than Centenary at 1:35.09. TCU also joined forces to break the Haynes Fitness Center pool record in the 400-free relay, as the quartet of Jash Bagby, Rourke Barrett, Andy Garcia-Montes and Ben Iannacone tapped in at 3:09.83.<\/p>\n
Junior Jeff Gettel remained dominant in the backstroke Saturday, keeping his perfect record intact with a 52.60 clocking to win in the 100-back. Gettel, a Plano, Texas native, has yet to lose in the 100- or 200-back this season, moving to 11-0 on his back this season. <\/p>\n
Crespo finished the afternoon first in the 100-fly, taking the event with a time of 50.86, while Bagby remains unbeaten in the 50-free in his senior year, leading the way at 21.83. Other individual winners include Gyurko claiming the 500-free (4:39.55) and Garcia-Montes pacing the field in the 200-free (1:43.81).<\/p>\n
TCU will return home to conclude the 2009-10 regular dual meet season with a MWC showdown with No. 22 UNLV on Feb. 6. TCU will honor the 2009-10 senior class 10 minutes before the first event, which is set to begin at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n
