Women’s 200 Medley Relay FINAL<\/h3>\n
The United States dominated the women’s 200 medley relay from start to finish, winning by more than two seconds and crushing the world record.\u00a0Ali DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(26.12),\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong> (28.78),\u00a0Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> (24.44) and\u00a0Katrina Konopka<\/strong> (23.93) combined to swim a time of 1:43.27, breaking the previous world record of 1:44.04 set by Denmark two years ago.<\/p>\nThe win marks the second U.S. gold medal of the meet after Worrell led the women’s 400 free relay squad to a gold last night.<\/p>\n
Italy’s team of\u00a0Silvia Scalia<\/strong>,\u00a0Martina Carraro<\/strong>,\u00a0Silvia Di Pietro<\/strong> and\u00a0Erika Ferraioli<\/strong> took silver in 1:45.38, and Denmark’s\u00a0Mie Nielsen<\/strong>,\u00a0Matilde Schroeder<\/strong>,\u00a0Emilie Beckmann<\/strong> and\u00a0Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong> got the bronze in 1:45.98.<\/p>\nCanada finished fourth, just out of the medals, in 1:46.00, and Australia was next in 1:46.27. Russia (1:46.61), Japan (1:47.90) and China (1:48.15) rounded out the field.<\/p>\n
Men’s 100 Back FINAL<\/h3>\n
Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Shabasov<\/strong> led for most of the second 50 and even led by an arm’s length with five meters to go. But Australia’s\u00a0Mitch Larkin<\/strong> stormed home and timed his finish perfectly, touching the wall four one-hundredths in front.<\/p>\nLarkin touched in 49.65, while Shabasov came in just behind in 49.69. China’s\u00a0Xu Jiayu<\/strong> took the bronze in 50.02.<\/p>\nJapan’s\u00a0Junya Koga<\/strong>, swimming out in lane eight, was out first at the 50 but faded to fourth, finishing in 50.21. Just behind was Poland’s\u00a0Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong> in 50.22 and the USA’s\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>in 50.24.<\/p>\nRomania’s\u00a0Robert Glinta<\/strong> (50.52) and Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (50.95) rounded out the field.<\/p>\nWomen’s 200 Fly FINAL<\/h3>\n
Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> pulled away from the USA’s\u00a0Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> on the third 50 and then held on down the stretch to win gold in the 200 fly. It was Hosszu’s second gold medal of the meet after dominating the 400 IM Tuesday night.<\/p>\nHosszu touched in 2:02.15, while Worrell finished second in 2:02.89, breaking\u00a0Cammile Adams’<\/strong> American record of 2:03.39 set last year. Worrell competed in this final less than 15 minutes after helping the U.S. women set a world record in the 200 medley relay.<\/p>\nChina’s\u00a0Zhang Yufei<\/strong> took the bronze in 2:05.10, just ahead of the USA’s\u00a0Ella Eastin<\/strong> (2:05.66).<\/p>\nRussia’s\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> was fifth in 2:06.20, and Australia’s\u00a0Emily Washer\u00a0<\/strong>(2:07.19), Canada’s\u00a0Katerine Savard<\/strong> (2:07.49) and Japan’s\u00a0Miyu Nakano<\/strong> (2:09.42) also qualified for the top eight.<\/p>\nMen’s 100 Breast FINAL<\/h3>\n
Germany’s\u00a0Marco Koch<\/strong>\u00a0pulled away over the last 10 meters and took gold in the men’s 100 breast at the Short Course World Championships in Kazan.<\/p>\nKoch touched in 56.77 to win the World title, 0.23 ahead of Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong>, who picked up the silver as he touched out four other swimmers who were all within a tenth of a second.<\/p>\nItaly’s\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli\u00a0<\/strong>got the bronze in 57.04, just ahead of Brazil’s\u00a0Felipe Franca Silva<\/strong> (57.05), Russia’s\u00a0Oleg Kostin<\/strong> (57.07) and the USA’s\u00a0Cody Miller<\/strong> (57.08), all hard-luck finishers on the night.<\/p>\nAnother American,\u00a0Nic Fink<\/strong>, took seventh in 57.22, and Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> touched eighth in 57.28.<\/p>\nWomen’s 50 Breast FINAL<\/h3>\n
19-year-old\u00a0American\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong> pulled ahead of world record-holder\u00a0Alia Atkinson<\/strong> of Jamaica\u00a0<\/strong>to win the World title in the women’s 50 breast. King posted a time of 28.92, smashing her own American record of 29.17 set in the semifinals Tuesday night.<\/p>\nThe time moves King to fourth all-time in the event, behind Atkinson, the USA’s\u00a0Jessica Hardy<\/strong> and Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>. Hardy is actually the fastest American in history in the event, but her time does not count as an American record since she swam the time in late 2009 with the use of a full bodysuit that had already been banned in the U.S.<\/p>\nAtkinson finished second in 29.11, well off her world record of 28.64 set in October.\u00a0Molly Hannis\u00a0<\/strong>made it a 1-3 finish for the U.S. as she picked up bronze in 29.58.<\/p>\nFinland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> came in fourth in a strong 29.72, while Russia’s\u00a0Natalia Ivaneeva<\/strong> was fifth in 30.14. Rounding out the final were Norway’s\u00a0Susann Bjornsen<\/strong> (30.28),\u00a0Australia’s\u00a0Jessica Hansen<\/strong> (30.43) and Belgium’s\u00a0Fanny Lecluyse<\/strong> (30.45).<\/p>\nMen’s 200 Free FINAL<\/h3>\n
South Korea’s\u00a0Park Tae Hwan<\/strong> won his second gold medal in Windsor, taking gold in the 200 free after winning the 400 free in come-from-behind fashion Thursday night. Park touched in 1:41.03, edging out the championship record of 1:41.08 set by\u00a0Ryan Lochte\u00a0<\/strong>back in 2010.<\/p>\nSouth Africa’s\u00a0Chad le Clos<\/strong> was in last place at the halfway split and in seventh at the 150. He made a real run on the last 50, coming home in 24.93, but he did not have enough left to catch Park, settling for silver in 1:41.65.<\/p>\nRussia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Krasnykh<\/strong>, the silver medalist in the 400 free behind Park, picked up a bronze here with a time of 1:41.95.<\/p>\nTrinidad and Tobago’s\u00a0Dylan Carter<\/strong>, the surprise top qualifier out of prelims, finished fourth in 1:42.48. Fifth went to South Africa’s\u00a0Myles Brown\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:43.22.<\/p>\nRounding out the field were Australia’s\u00a0Daniel Smith<\/strong> (1:43.22), Finland’s\u00a0Matias Koski<\/strong> (1:43.51) and Denmark’s\u00a0Anders Nielsen<\/strong> (1:43.69).<\/p>\nWomen’s 100 Free Semifinals<\/h3>\n
Canada’s\u00a0Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> is understandably a favorite of the home crowd in Windsor, and she thrilled the crowd when she posted a time of 52.19 to tie with Australia’s\u00a0Brittany Elmslie<\/strong> for the top seed in the event headed into the final.<\/p>\nWhile that pair will share the two middle lanes, Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee<\/strong> (52.47) and Canada’s\u00a0Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> (52.58) will be on either side as they qualified third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\nThe Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> qualified fifth in 52.76, just ahead of Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini<\/strong> (52.77), who already won the 200 free Thursday night.<\/p>\nChina’s\u00a0Zhu Menghui<\/strong> (52.90) and Russia’s\u00a0Veronika Popova<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(52.94) secured the last two spots for Thursday’s final, locking out the experienced duo of Denmark’s\u00a0Jeanette Ottesen\u00a0<\/strong>(53.08) and the USA’s\u00a0Amanda Weir\u00a0<\/strong>(53.10).<\/p>\nMen’s 100 Fly Semifinals<\/h3>\n
Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Barrett\u00a0<\/strong>pulled away from the USA’s\u00a0Tom Shields<\/strong> and South Africa’s\u00a0Chad le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>to take the top seed for the final of the men’s 100 fly.<\/p>\nBarrett’s time of 49.21 improved him to sixth all-time in the event, but Shields and le Clos are two who have been faster. Shields qualified second in 49.46, and le Clos placed third in 49.84.<\/p>\n
Australia’s\u00a0David Morgan<\/strong> won the first semifinal in 50.06, and that was good for the fourth-best seed for Thursday night. France’s\u00a0Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>was sixth in 50.38.<\/p>\nAlso qualifying for the final were Australia’s\u00a0Tomasso D’Orsogna<\/strong> (50.39), France’s\u00a0Mehdy Metella<\/strong> (50.46) and Japan’s\u00a0Takeshi Kawamoto\u00a0<\/strong>(50.54).<\/p>\nWomen’s 100 Back FINAL<\/h3>\n
Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> pulled away from the field on the last 25 and ended up winning gold in the women’s 100 back by seven tenths of a second.<\/p>\nHosszu touched in 55.54, a half-second off her own world record of 55.03 set back in 2014, but it was good enough for her third gold medal of the meet after winning the 400 IM Tuesday and the 200 fly earlier Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse<\/strong>, a Windsor native, finished second in 56.24 to pick up a silver medal for Canada. Great Britain’s\u00a0Georgia Davies\u00a0<\/strong>touched out long course World Champion\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong> in Australia for the bronze, 56.45 to 56.46.<\/p>\nAnother British swimmer,\u00a0Kathleen Dawson<\/strong>, finished fifth in 56.73, and the USA’s\u00a0Ali DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>was sixth after being in contention through the 75-meter mark.<\/p>\nDenmark’s\u00a0Mie Nielsen<\/strong> finished second in 56.93, and Ukraine’s\u00a0Daryna Zevina<\/strong> took eighth in 57.28.<\/p>\nMixed 200 Free Relay FINAL<\/h3>\n
Buoyed by a stellar 20.44 split by second leg swimmer\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong>, Russia won gold in the mixed 200 free relay to close out the second night of swimming in Windsor.<\/p>\nAleksei Brianskii<\/strong>,\u00a0Morozov,\u00a0Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> and\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova<\/strong> captured the gold in 1:29.73. Nasretdinova had just enough at the end to hold off the Netherlands’\u00a0Maaike De Waard<\/strong>, who touched nine one-hundredths behind in 1:29.82.<\/p>\nAfter\u00a0Jesse Puts<\/strong> and\u00a0Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> swam the first two legs for the Dutch men,\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> split a blistering 23.34, the top time among women, and then De Waard brought her team home. Canada’s team of\u00a0Yuri Kisil<\/strong>,\u00a0Markus Thormeyer<\/strong>,\u00a0Michelle Williams\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> finished just one one-hundredth behind the Netherlands for bronze, touching in 1:29.83.<\/p>\nFrance just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in 1:29.96, and Japan finished a second back in 1:30.95 after being in contention at the halfway point.
