{"id":232086,"date":"2016-12-06T10:44:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T17:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=232086"},"modified":"2016-12-06T10:44:31","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T17:44:31","slug":"lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-tom-shields-100-butterfly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-tom-shields-100-butterfly\/","title":{"rendered":"LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Tom Shields 100 Butterfly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there was plenty to get excited about in college swimming this week, this week\u2019s LumaLanes Performance of the week goes to U.S. Olympian and National Team member <\/span><b>Tom Shields, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tom-shields-becomes-first-man-to-break-44-seconds-in-100-fly-scy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who broke the U.S. Open and American records in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2016 AT&amp;T Winter National Championships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Touching the wall in 43.84, Shields became the first man to break the 44-second barrier in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Performance of the Week -- Dec. 6, 2016\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IoZINIEilsQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That swim took down <\/span><b>Austin Staab\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 American Record of 44.18, which has long been a target for butterfliers across the country as one of the last remaining \u201csuper suit\u201d records. Shields also took down\u00a0<\/span><b>Joseph Schooling\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Open Record that was set in the same pool at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Schooling himself almost broke through the 44 second barrier, touching the wall in 44.01 at that meet to set the old record. You can take a look at the split comparison below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Shields (Dec 2016): 20.57\/23.27 \u2013 43.84<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph Schooling (Mar 2016): 20.46\/23.55 \u2013 44.01<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Staab (Mar 2009): 20.56\/23.62 \u2013 44.18<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, Shields was actually out the slowest among the three swimmers at the 50 mark, touching in 20.57 to Schooling\u2019s 20.46 and Staab\u2019s 20.56. But the former Cal Bear came back like a monster, splitting 23.27 to gain nearly 3-tenths on Schooling\u2019s swim and nearly 4-tenths on Staab. Shields will be back in the pool later this week, this time in short course meters, competing for the United States team at the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships in Canada.
