American Swimming Team: PAST (Part I):<\/h2>\n

The name, \u201cAmerican Swimming Team\u201d (AST), is intended to capture the concept of American swimmers who collectively form one team.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, each swimmer is a contributor to an individual swim team made up of athletes, coaches and volunteers that produce a cell of the American Swimming Team. The stronger each cell is, the stronger the body. The greater the quality and quantity of local competition among swimmers, the greater the success of the American Swimming Team at the top of the sport, including the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

Formulating the organization of competitive swimming throughout the United States required vision and leadership. One of several key figures was British-born coach Matt<\/strong> Mann<\/strong>, who championed the value of the sport: \u201cSwimming is a wonderful sport because it is the best competitive outlet I know for a child who is long on desire and short on natural ability. Unlike running, no one knows how to swim until you teach them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the next several issues of Swimming World Magazine, we will take a quick look at the American Swimming Team past and present, and will provide some thoughts on the future.<\/p>\n
