The previous American and U.S. Open records were split between\u00a0<strong>Austin Staab<\/strong> (44.18) and\u00a0<strong>Joseph Schooling<\/strong> (44.01) respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Comparative splits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tom Shields (Dec 2016): 20.57\/23.27 &#8211; 43.84<\/li>\n<li>Joseph Schooling (Mar 2016): 20.46\/23.55 &#8211; 44.01<\/li>\n<li>Austin Staab (Mar 2009): 20.56\/23.62 &#8211; 44.18<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the race Shields commented that he felt his chance at becoming the first swimmer under 44-seconds was dwindling as he watched NCAA stars\u00a0<strong>Joseph Schooling, Jack Conger<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> edge closer to the existing records.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Watch the full race here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pttkAIIyd4s?list=PLJUznzZd1j8XOV-0IwuSiLic7BoY8dFGe\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the race, Shields spoke with\u00a0<em>Swimming World&#8217;s<\/em><strong> David Rieder\u00a0<\/strong>about his swim and how it felt to finally break the record that he had pursued for so long.
