{"id":230936,"date":"2016-11-29T00:05:42","date_gmt":"2016-11-29T07:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=230936"},"modified":"2016-11-30T20:19:52","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T03:19:52","slug":"swimming-world-magazine-announces-pacific-rim-swimmers-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-magazine-announces-pacific-rim-swimmers-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Swimming World Magazine Announces Pacific Rim Swimmers of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Each\u00a0year\u00a0<em>Swimming World Magazine<\/em>\u00a0selects the top male and female swimmers from the following regions: Africa, the Pacific Rim, Europe, America, and World.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>\u00a0began announcing the top athletes in each region leading up to the announcement of the Male and Female World Swimmer of the Year on December 1st. \u00a0The final announcement will coincide with the official release of the December\u00a0<em>Swimming World Magazine<\/em>. \u00a0To download and\u00a0read previous \u201cSwimmers of the Year\u201d, visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/issues\/2015\" target=\"_blank\">Swimming World Vault<\/a>\u00a0and download past\u00a0December issues.<\/p>\n<h2>Male Pacific Rim Swimmer of the Year<\/h2>\n<p>One year after missing the World Championships due to a fractured elbow, Japan\u2019s <strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong> made his return to the international stage in grand fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Hagino was named Male World and Pacific Rim Swimmer of the Year in 2014 after winning two gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships and four golds at the Asian Games. He routinely swam the 400 free and the backstroke events that year, but he focused on the 200 free and especially the IMs for his shot at Olympic glory.<\/p>\n<p>He kicked things off in Rio with a gold medal in the 400 IM\u2014just nine days before his 22nd birthday. Hagino opened up a massive lead in the backstroke, then held off a surging <strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> on the freestyle leg. Hagino\u2019s final time of 4:06.05 made him the third fastest performer in history, behind <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> and <strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Hagino also finished seventh in the 200 free and second in the 200 IM. In 2012, she didn\u2019t make the Olympic team and began questioning why she should even remain in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>But after a couple of rough years, all doubts were erased early in 2016 when Kaneto downed the Japanese and Asian records in the 200 breast (2:19.65) in April at the Japanese Championships, which doubled as Japan\u2019s Olympic Trials for the 2016 Rio Games.<\/p>\n<p>The two-time Olympian delivered a dynamic performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she powered to gold in the 200 breast- stroke.
