BOCA RATON, Florida, January 8. THE nationally-ranked LSU men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2010 portion of their schedule on a winning note Friday, sweeping the Florida Atlantic Owls at FAU Pool.<\/p>\n
The 18th-ranked LSU men (2-4) won nine events en route to a 126.5-73.5 victory, while the 21st-ranked Lady Tigers (3-4) emerged victorious, 129-71, with wins in nine races as well.<\/p>\n
"It was great to get some competition going while we are in south Florida," LSU head coach Adam Schmitt said. "We had some good races against the Owls this afternoon. We are looking forward to taking on Florida in a couple of days."<\/p>\n
LSU received victories from 13 different swimmers. Sophomore Morgan McGee and junior Eric Zeller led the way with a pair of victories apiece. McGee earned first-place in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Zeller swept the 50 and 100 freestyle.
\nSenior Lauren Grandy recorded the win in the women's 500 free, and junior Jane Trepp touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.10 seconds). Lady Tiger freshmen Amanda Kendall, Jana Ruimerman and Sally Wood also claimed victories. Kendall secured first in the 100 free, Ruimerman took top honors in the 100 back and Wood swam to victory in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
On the men's side, junior Clint Hallum registered first-place in the 200 free (1:43.48), while sophomore Simon Diefenthal reached the wall first in the 100 back.<\/p>\n
Freshmen Craig Hamilton and Andrei Tuomola came away with victories in the 1000 free (9:29.10) and 100 fly (51.62), respectively. In addition, fellow freshmen Timothy Dasinger and Sean Roddy delivered wins. Dasinger posted the victory in the 500 free (4:40.28), and Roddy swam the fastest mark in the 100 breast, 58.99.<\/p>\n
LSU will travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face SEC opponent Florida on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST) in the O'Connell Center Natatorium.<\/p>\n
