SEVERAL members of the Texas men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming teams claimed top finishes in the first day of competition at the American Short Course Championships on Thursday, March 8 at the Jamail Swim Center.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Cherie Albertson (Houston, Texas) touched fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a season-best time of 1:05.31, while sophomore Ashlee Fotinakes (Marietta, Ga.) finished 14th with a time of 1:06.84. In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Jenny Cray (Federal Way, Wash.) claimed sixth-place honors (56.43) and junior Sarah Allen (Chapel Hill, N.C.) placed 20th (57.78). <\/p>\n<p>Valerie Oswald, who is sitting out the 2000-01 season after transferring to UT from Virginia, won the 400 IM in a time of 4:14.56 and finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.97). Joscelin Yeo, who is also sitting out the 2000-01 season after transfering to Texas from California and swimming unattached, claimed second-place honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.32).<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#39;s side, junior Michael Chozick (Austin, Texas) posted a fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, while freshman Paul Richard (Mandeville, La.) placed 10th (57.52). In the 400 IM, sophomore Timmy Chung (Mercer Island, Wash.) claimed fifth place with a time of 3:58.70. Swimming unattached, freshmen Cooper Phillips (Houston, Texas) (4:01.95) and Greg Norman (Richardson, Texas) (4:05.79) finished eighth and 12th, respectively in the 400 IM. <\/p>\n<p>Austin McAnally, who also swam unattached, claimed third-place honors in the 200 freestyle (1:39.86).<\/p>\n<p>Former Longhorns also made strong performances in the first night of competition. Olympian Neil Walker captured the 200 freestyle (1:36.42) and 100 butterfly (47.17), while former Longhorn Bryan Jones claimed second-place honors in the 100 fly with a time of<br \/>\n47.30. Tammie Spatz-Stone also won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.97.<\/p>\n<p>The American Short Course Championships will resume on Friday, March 9 with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. at the Jamail Swim Center.
