RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, December 21. EARLIER this month, Paralympian swimmers put on a show at the IPC World Championships held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The swimming community has been stirred up on the FINA scene due to more than 250 world records in two years. In the Paralympic movement, that's just a bit more than a week's worth of work \u2013 as evidenced by the more than 150 world records that went down at this meet.<\/p>\n
Here's a breakdown of some of the numbers behind the world records set at the meet: <\/p>\n
* 35 women accounted for 69 individual world records.
\n* 37 men accounted for 92 individual world records.
\n* eight relay world record performances occurred.<\/p>\n
Among the women, two swimmers stood out. Mallory Weggeman of the U.S. and Daniela Schulte of Germany. Weggemann finished the meet with seven world record performances in the S7 category. She set world records in the 50 free (32.87, 32.17), 100 free (1:11.45, 1:08.56), 400 free (5:16.15, 5:08.53) and 50 fly (35.17). Meanwhile, Schulte took down six world records in the S11 category of the 100 free (1:09.87, 1:08.50), 400 free (5:28.85), 100 back (1:21.45, 1:19.96), and 200 IM (2:51.27).<\/p>\n
For the men, Brazil's Daniel De Faria Dias and Andre Brasil Esteves enjoyed strong outings. Dias posted nine world record times in the S5 division. He lowered world records in the 50 free (32.01), 100 free (1:08.17), 200 free (2:29.85), 50 fly (36.12, 34.02), 100 breast (1:31.49), 50 back (36.48, 35.06) and 200 IM (2:45.94). Esteves put up seven world records in the S10 division. He downed marks in the 50 free (22.44), 100 free (48.70), 400 free (3:54.57), 100 fly (54.76), 100 back (57.29), 100 IM (57.68) and 200 IM (2:04.05).<\/p>\n
Australia's Matthew Levy also turned in seven world records for the men in the S7 division. He clocked world records in the 100 free (1:00.37), 400 free (4:51.54), 50 fly (32.21, 31.70), 100 IM (1:13.27, 1:11.32) and 200 IM (2:38.09).<\/p>\n
