{"id":230196,"date":"2016-11-22T09:55:42","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T16:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=230196"},"modified":"2016-11-22T09:55:42","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T16:55:42","slug":"lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-katie-ledeckys-1650-freestyle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-katie-ledeckys-1650-freestyle\/","title":{"rendered":"LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Katie Ledecky\u2019s 1,650 Freestyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The week\u2019s LumaLanes Performance of the Week goes to Stanford freshman and Olympic gold medalist <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the second straight week<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as she<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued her onslaught on the NCAA record book this week at the 2016 Ohio State Invitational. <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke three NCAA records at the meet, with her most notable performance coming in the 1,650 freestyle on the last day of the meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3BbZyXoOUOY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heading into the 1,650 freestyle, <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already owned the American record in the event at 15:13.30 from way back in 2014. The Stanford freshman hadn\u2019t swum the event in short course yards since then, and with a few world records in the long course mile between now and then <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was due to throw down a best time. The only question was how fast <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would end up going, having already broken <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/race-video-katie-ledecky-smashes-1000-freestyle-ncaa-record\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the NCAA record in the 1,000 in a dual meet last week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the University of Texas and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-clips-american-record-in-500-free-at-osu-invite\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 500 free earlier in the week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The distance star didn\u2019t disappoint, splitting a 9:08.99 at the 1,000 to finish with a final time of 15:03.92. That beats her old best time and American record by nearly ten seconds while also crushing <\/span><b>Leah Smith\u2019s <\/b>NCAA\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record of 15:25.30 by more than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twenty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seconds. That time also positions <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the fastest woman in history by more than twenty seconds. The second fastest time in the event belongs to <\/span><b>Katie Hoff, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was the previous American record holder at 15:24.35 from 2008. <\/span><b>Ledecky <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke that record in 2013. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ledecky\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performance in the 1,650 freestyle gives her four NCAA and two American records so far for the season. Her 9:08.99 split at the 1,000 also breaks her week-old NCAA record in the event, and gives her six of the seven fastest times ever in the event. She still owns the American record with a 8:59.65 from the NCAP Invitational last December. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky <\/b><span
