{"id":230060,"date":"2016-11-21T07:33:39","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T14:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=230060"},"modified":"2016-11-21T07:33:39","modified_gmt":"2016-11-21T14:33:39","slug":"australias-jessica-ashwood-withdraws-sc-worlds-due-illness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/australias-jessica-ashwood-withdraws-sc-worlds-due-illness\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia&#8217;s Jessica Ashwood Withdraws From SC Worlds Due To Illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Distance Freestyler\u00a0<strong>Jessica Ashwood<\/strong>\u00a0has had to withdraw from the upcoming FINA World Short Course Championships due to illness.<\/p>\n<p>Triple-Olympian\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong>\u00a0alongside fellow Rio Olympians\u00a0<strong>Brittany Elmslie<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>David Morgan<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Daniel Smith<\/strong>\u00a0will headline the now 19-strong team that consists of 11 rookies but they will be without their teammate Ashwood who after falling ill with a viral infection has had to withdraw from the team.<\/p>\n<p>After making the difficult decision, Ashwood has temporarily returned to her family home in Sydney to rest and recover and said she was disappointed she would not be able to join her teammates in Windsor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to withdraw from the world short course team after being unwell with a viral infection,\u201d Ashwood said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepresenting the Australian Dolphins is a privilege but, I felt I could not represent the team to the highest standard while unwell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m now taking time to rest and recover so that I can return to training healthy and strong in preparation for the Australian Championships next year in April,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>With the athletes\u2019 health and well-being always the number one priority Head Coach\u00a0<strong>Jacco Verhaeren\u00a0<\/strong>said, although she will be missed on the team, he very much supported Ashwood\u2019s decision to withdraw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s very unfortunate that Jess had to withdraw from the World Short Course Championships,\u201d Verhaeren said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut looking at the bigger picture with Trials in April and another World Championship in Budapest next year it\u2019s more important to get healthy and after that to start the training required to achieve those goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Verhaeren was also excited at the fresh new faces on the team and what they could produce at their first major meet.<\/p>\n<p>The World Championship Team is an exciting mix of rookies, athletes that haven\u2019t been on teams for a few years and some recent Olympians,\u201d Verhaeren said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim is to improve on their results from the national short course championships to see where that takes them.
