The Hokie men’s and women’s teams both earned wins at the Virginia Tech Invite, wrapping up their last competition of the semester with strong performances Saturday evening at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
The Virginia Tech women earned a 1121-943 win over Purdue, with William & Mary third with 550.5. The Hokies blew out all other teams on the men’s side, scoring 1287 points as Purdue edged Navy for second overall, 659.5 to 641.5.<\/p>\n
Jessica Hespeler<\/strong> opened the session strong for the Hokies with a three-second win in the women’s 1650 free. Hespeler swam in 16:09.56, and Purdue’s\u00a0Kaersten Meitz<\/strong> finished second in 16:12.88. Well back in third was Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Jenna Beattie<\/strong> in 16:37.48. Purdue’s\u00a0Nicholas McDermott<\/strong> won the men’s mile in 15:31.18, ahead of Yale’s\u00a0Ben Lerude<\/strong> (15:39.09) and Navy’s\u00a0Braden Fauffer<\/strong> (15:41.25).<\/p>\n The Hokies finished 1-2 in the women’s 200 back as\u00a0Klaudia Nazieblo\u00a0<\/strong>dominated, finishing in 1:54.56, and teammate\u00a0Fiona Donnelly<\/strong> took second in 1:56.27. William & Mary’s\u00a0Sophie Rittenhouse\u00a0<\/strong>got third in 1:59.01. Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Robert Owen\u00a0<\/strong>then dominated the men’s 200 back in 1:43.21. Purdue’s\u00a0Jake Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>edged VT’s\u00a0Sean Workman<\/strong> for second, 1:47.31 to 1:47.37.<\/p>\n Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Adriana Grabski<\/strong> won the women’s 100 free in 50.28, just ahead of William & Mary’s\u00a0Jaimie Miller<\/strong> (50.36), Hespeler (50.55), Villanova’s Alexa Fabbri<\/strong> (50.55) and\u00a0Jackie Smailis<\/strong> (50.62). Purdue got its first win of the night in the men’s 100 free, where\u00a0Filip Bujoczek<\/strong> clocked 44.33. William & Mary’s\u00a0Joseph Eiden<\/strong> picked up runner-up honors in 45.04, and Yale’s\u00a0Henry Gaissert<\/strong> was third in 45.26.<\/p>\n Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Kelly Henry<\/strong> held off Purdue’s\u00a0Cady Farlow<\/strong> for the top spot in the women’s 200 breast, 2:14.47 to 2:14.80. Old Dominion’s\u00a0Ashley Brown<\/strong> came in third at 2:17.37. Purdue’s\u00a0Malat Amaltdinov<\/strong> dominated the men’s 200 breast in 1:54.95. Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Brandon Fiala<\/strong> (1:57.28) and Navy’s\u00a0Marlin Brutkiewicz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.42) finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n Purdue swept the top three spots in the women’s 200 fly.\u00a0Emmy Rawson\u00a0<\/strong>won the race in 1:58.36, ahead of teammates\u00a0Taite Kitchel<\/strong> (1:58.95) and\u00a0Meagan Lim<\/strong> (2:00.29). Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Norbert Szabo\u00a0<\/strong>won the last individual race of the meet, cruising in the men’s 200 fly in 1:45.51. Purdue’s\u00a0Grant Lewis<\/strong> finished second in 1:49.55, and Navy’s\u00a0Nick Pfanstiel<\/strong> touched third in 1:50.37.<\/p>\n The Hokies rounded out the weekend with a pair of wins in the 400 free relays. Donnelly, Hespeler, Grabski and Nazieblo\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 3:19.31, more than a second ahead of Purdue, which finished second in 3:20.35. Well back in third was Villanova in 3:23.67. Minutes later, Szabo,\u00a0Ian Ho<\/strong>,\u00a0Harrison Pierce<\/strong> and Fiala won the men’s 400 free relay in 2:58.22, the only squad under 3:00.
