Hosting ten other programs at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, Virginia Tech opened up their November invitational with a big performance, winning six different events on the first of three nights of competition.<\/p>\n
The Hokies opened up the meet with a win in the women’s 200 free relay.\u00a0Adriana Grabski<\/strong>,\u00a0Auriane de Premilhat<\/strong>,\u00a0Caroline Buscaglia<\/strong> and\u00a0Jessica Hespeler\u00a0<\/strong>had just enough to squeak by the Purdue squad of\u00a0Jackie Smailis<\/strong>,\u00a0Danielle Auckley<\/strong>,\u00a0Breanna Robinson<\/strong> and\u00a0Gracie Hernandez<\/strong>, 1:31.73 to 1:32.00. Villanova took third in 1:33.14.<\/p>\n Virginia Tech then also won the men’s relay, that race in dominating fashion.\u00a0Brandon Fiala<\/strong>,\u00a0Ian Ho<\/strong>,\u00a0Brent Benedict<\/strong> and\u00a0Nick Olson<\/strong> combined to swim a 1:19.69. The Naval Academy edged Purdue for second, 1:21.41 to 1:21.69.<\/p>\n Hespeler was back in the water in the 500 free, and she picked up a comfortable win in 4:40.51. Purdue’s\u00a0Kaersten Meitz\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in 4:42.72, well Villanova’s\u00a0Emily Mayo<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Jenna Beattie<\/strong>, who tied for third in 4:51.40. Hokies\u00a0Michael Craddock\u00a0<\/strong>(4:26.08) and\u00a0Hassler Carroll<\/strong> (4:28.62) swept the top two spots, with Carroll just edging out Purdue’s\u00a0Nicholas McDowell<\/strong>, who came in at 4:28.66.<\/p>\n Fiona Donnelly\u00a0<\/strong>touched out Virginia Tech teammate\u00a0Klaudia Nazieblo<\/strong> to win the women’s 200 IM, 1:58.20 to 1:58.41. Purdue’s\u00a0Emmy Rawson\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the top three in 2:01.38. The Hokies actually swept the top four spots in the 200 IM, but it was\u00a0Norbert Szabo\u00a0<\/strong>holding off\u00a0defending ACC champion\u00a0Brandon Fiala<\/strong>, 1:44.92 to 1:45.27.\u00a0Robert Owen<\/strong> came in next at 1:46.72, and\u00a0Zach Switzer<\/strong> was fourth in 1:49.04.<\/p>\n William & Mary’s\u00a0Jaimie Miller<\/strong> won the women’s 50 free by eight one-hundredths over Purdue’s\u00a0Jackie Smalls<\/strong>, 22.81 to 22.89. Villanova’s\u00a0Alexa Fabbri\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed third in 23.11. Yale’s\u00a0Aaron Greenburg\u00a0<\/strong>then won the last individual swimming event of the evening,\u00a0edging out Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Ian Ho<\/strong>, 20.04 to 20.07. Ho’s teammate\u00a0Harrison Pierce<\/strong> finished third in 20.54.<\/p>\n Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Benjamin Schiesl<\/strong> just edged out Navy’s\u00a0Bradley Buchter\u00a0<\/strong>to win the men’s one-meter diving, 347.05 to 347.00. VT’s\u00a0Jack Gigliotti<\/strong> finished third (311.65). UConn’s\u00a0Alli Butera\u00a0<\/strong>was the winner on the women’s three-meter board with a score of 309.95. VT’s\u00a0Ashlynn Peters\u00a0<\/strong>(308.50) and Clemson’s\u00a0Freida Lim<\/strong> (304.20) completed the top three.<\/p>\n Purdue narrowly edged out Virginia Tech to win the women’s 400 medley relay. Smallis,\u00a0Jinq En Phee<\/strong> and\u00a0Meagan Limb\u00a0<\/strong>set up Meitz, who overtook a tired Hespeler down the stretch and won by three one-hundredths, 3:38.10 to 3:38.13. Purdue’s “C” team finished third in 3:41.69.<\/p>\n The Hokies closed out the session with a half-second victory over Purdue in the men’s 400 medley relay. Owen, Fiala, Szabo and Ho combined to finish in 3:14.11, and Purdue came in next at 3:14.78.
