{"id":229355,"date":"2016-11-15T09:54:42","date_gmt":"2016-11-15T16:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=229355"},"modified":"2016-11-15T15:35:03","modified_gmt":"2016-11-15T22:35:03","slug":"swimming-new-zealand-national-head-coach-at-odds-with-organizations-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-new-zealand-national-head-coach-at-odds-with-organizations-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Swimming New Zealand National Head Coach At Odds With Organization&#8217;s Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dave Crampton, Swimming World Contributor.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Swimming New Zealand\u2019s new head coach<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jerry-olszewski-named-national-head-coach-of-swimming-new-zealand\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>Jerry Olszewski<\/strong><\/a> is publicly at odds with his federation\u2019s Olympic strategy and his own advertised job description, saying measurements of success are unrealistic and changes need to be made in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming New Zealand aimed to have one medal and five finalists at Rio this year, but its highest placing was ninth. Just two New Zealand-based swimmers competed at Rio.<\/p>\n<p>The federation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org.nz\/visageimages\/High%20Performance\/Swimming%20New%20Zealand%20High%20Performance%20Strategy%202013-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2013- 2020 strategy<\/a> had a key goal of three medals and 10 finalists at the Tokyo Olympics. That was up-dated and downgraded earlier this year to achieve \u201cpodium results\u201d at the Olympics in 2020. Olszewski\u2019s job description is to work \u201ctowards Swimming New Zealand\u2019s vision and mission as established in the High Performance Strategy 2016- 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Achievement of these goals attracts increased funding from High Performance Sport New Zealand ( HPSNZ), but Olzewski\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/swimming.org.nz\/visageimages\/Vacancies\/National%20Head%20Coach%20-%20Swimming%20New%20Zealand.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">job description<\/a> states that his contract is subject to the outcome of this year\u2019s review with HPSNZ.<\/p>\n<p>The federation is looking at another possible $100,000 reduction in funding at the review, in part, as it did not achieve its strategic goals and Olszewski believes it is unlikely to achieve its downgraded 2020 goals either.<\/p>\n<p>Olszewski, who took up his role in September, said such measurements need to be realistic, noting, \u201cit seems that the general public in New Zealand only measures success in Olympic sports by the colour of medals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Olzsewski believes getting into a final will be hard enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur aim will be to continue to improve our international ranking and look towards developing finalists at the Olympics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org.nz\/selection-criteria-pool-open-water.html\" target=\"_blank\">selection criteria<\/a> for pinnacle events indicates that relay teams for Tokyo should be able to reach the top 8.<\/p>\n<p>Olszewski believes that\u2019s unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p>He also proposes a simplified and progressive pathway for swimmers; a clear and challenging international time-based qualifying standard and wants to bring in a change to the timeframes for trials leading to pinnacle meets.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming New Zealand\u2019s 2016 trials were held less than 48 hours after the NCAA college season finished.
