YPSILANTI, Michigan, December 6. THE Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team won its 12th straight EMU Invitational, totaling 1,287 points and defeating four other teams in the two-day annual event at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium Saturday evening.<\/p>\n
The Eagles took 18-of-20 events on the day and set a new standard of 12 straight EMU Invitational wins. The 1,287 points amassed by the Green and White over the weekend eclipsed last year's total of 1,220. Coming in second was NCAA Division II Wayne State University with 991 points, followed by Waterloo College (478), University of Findlay (175) and Oakland University (25).<\/p>\n
Once again, EMU freshman Jacob Hanson shined, winning six events including three individual races in the meet. The Bloomington, Ill. native's victory in the 200-yard backstroke on Friday was just a glimpse of what was to come. Hanson continued to impress by winning the 200-yard IM in a meet record time of 1:50.79, while also taking the win in the 400-yard IM.<\/p>\n
He also had a busy day of relays, teaming up with Scott Murphy, Alan Duski and Matt Zavislak to take the 200-yard medley relay before combining with Troy Esentan, Carlos Nunez, and Kevin Kubik to win the 800-yard freestyle relay. He finished off the day by leading the 400-yard medley relay team of Murphy, Zavislak and Owen Grey to a five second win.<\/p>\n
Zavislak had an impressive day of his own, winning six events as well with individual victories in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Along with the 200- and 400-yard medley relays, Zavislak also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay to a win.<\/p>\n
Other standouts include Esentan who added victories in the 200-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle, while Grey added wins in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events. For the diving team, it was Jeffrey Craig who stood out, winning the one meter (604.42) and three-meter (705.61) dives while setting meet records in both events.<\/p>\n
The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team finished in second place at the EMU Invitational for the seventh straight season thanks to eight top-three finishes and a stellar outing by junior Sarah Kowalski at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium Saturday evening, Dec. 5.<\/p>\n
The University of Michigan took the seven-team invitational with a score of 1,123, followed by the Eagles (816), Toledo (796), Wayne State (640), Waterloo (129), Findlay (128) and Oakland (53). It was Michigan's seventh straight EMU Invite title.<\/p>\n
Eastern Michigan's Kowalski recorded the lone win for the Eagles during the two-day annual event. The junior secured a win in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 51.06 with teammate Steph Cholyk not far behind coming in third.<\/p>\n
Danielle Hulvey represented the Eagles well on the diving boards by recorded two top-three finishes. The freshman dove to a second place finish in the three-meter with 570.60 points and was one of five divers that surpassed the old pool record which is now held by Michigan's Steph O'Callaghan (581.30). Hulvey also finished third in the one meter with 553.10 points and was one of 11 divers to set pool or and\/or meet records.<\/p>\n
Someone who also knew a little something about setting records was O'Callaghan's teammate, Margaret Kelly, who swam to two pool\/meet records. The senior won an impressive six events during the two-day meet. Her time of 1:59.19 in the 200-yard butterfly set a pool record while her 200-yard IM time of 2:02.11 was a new meet mark. She also added wins in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays, as well as the 200-yard medley relay.<\/p>\n
Another meet mark set was by Laura Lindsay of Toledo in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.97.<\/p>\n
The Eagles will now take a mid-season break before heading south to Miami, Fla. to take part in the FIU Invitational Jan. 2, 2010.<\/p>\n
