CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, December 5. THE 2009 MIT Invitational Swim Meet kicked off with twelve events on the first of two days of intense swimming and diving action. In addition to the host Engineers, the competition features squads from Bowdoin, Brandeis, Colby, NYU, Tufts and Wheaton. On the men's side, MIT has been commanding in the pool, while NYU has the overall points lead for the women.<\/p>\n
MIT swept the 200 yard free relays and 400 yard medley relays, clocking NCAA "B" cut times in all four races. NYU's Margaret Rippe outlasted her competition to win the 500 yard freestyle (5:06.27), while MIT's Max Pruner won the race on the men's side (4:49.12). In the 200 yard IM, Anna Kokensparger (2:06.56) and Brendan Deveney (1:53.03) both scored NCAA "B" cuts and set new MIT team records. MIT sprinters Amy Jacobi (24.57) and Luke Cummings (20.84) were winners in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
In diving, NYU's Kelly Dietz score of 258.10 put her first in a field of 28 on the 1 meter springboard, edging out Lindsay Gardel of Tufts (252.35). On the men's side, Tufts' Rob Matera won the 3 meter event in commanding fashion, scoring a 319.70, nearly 60 points ahead of runner-up Max Norris of NYU.<\/p>\n
