YPSILANTI, Michigan, December 5. THROUGH seven events during the first session at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational, the EMU men lead with 447 points while the women hold steady in second place with 298 points, following Friday's action at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium.<\/p>\n
The men took five of the seven events highlighted by a podium sweep of the 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Jacob Hanson came away with the victory with a time of 1:47.08 while Tyler Capen and Alan Duski finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Matt Zavislak touched the wall in 46.17 to take the 100-yard freestyle with Kevin Kubik following closely behind for a third place finish at 46.52. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Troy Esentan swam to a first place finish in 2:02.07, nipping Joaqui Abascal Gallegos of Wayne State by 62-tenths of a second.<\/p>\n
Owen Grey and Keith Coghlan finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly with Grey taking the win in 1:52.37. In the one meter dive, Jeffrey Craig tallied an impressive 604.42 points for first place. Shawn Gancarz, Andrew Saunders and Chris Alberty finished third through fifth.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, Michigan took five of the seven events and lead the EMU Invite with 361 points. Sarah Kowalski turned in the lone win for the Eagles, touching the wall in 51.06 to claim the 100-yard freestyle title. Eastern had four other top-three finishes on the day helping them to second place heading into Saturday.<\/p>\n
Sarah Maraskine (2:02.07) nearly edged out Michigan's Liz Johnson (2:01.33) in the 200-yard backstroke while Danielle Hulvey was runner-up in the three-meter dive with 570.60 points, falling just short of Michigan's Stephanie O'Callaghan who totaled 581.30 points.<\/p>\n
Action will continue with the second session beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jones Natatorium. The third session, which begins at 6 p.m., will conclude the annual event.<\/p>\n
