The Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) will have less power in key decision-making and in the Budapest 2024 bid moving forward after a series of Parliamentary legislation passed. The Hungarian government will now control all monetary and planning decisions as well as executive appointments related to Olympic sports.<\/p>\n

The efforts of the MOB will now relate exclusively to commercial and marketing opportunities as well as logistical planning for Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

According to InsideTheGames.biz, the move comes in response to a disappointing performance at the Olympics in Rio, where Hungary finished 12th overall with eight gold medals, three silvers and four bronze. But the country’s swimmers definitely did their part, contributing three gold (all by\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>), two silver (one each from Hosszu and\u00a0Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>) and one bronze (Tamas Kenderesi<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Bal\u00e1zs<\/strong> F\u00fcrjes<\/strong>, in charge of Budapest’s bid to host the 2024 Summer Games,\u00a0<\/strong>expressed continued optimism about the city’s chances of winning next year’s vote in Peru.<\/p>\n

“The Budapest Bid looks forward to continuing good relationships with our friends at the HOC, the Government and the City of Budapest. We are united in the quest to secure the honour of hosting the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.\u00a0The vision of an Olympic Games in Budapest in 2024 is a source of great national pride.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

InsideTheGames.biz explains that the change in structure breaks from the pattern of delegating more responsibility to National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and\u00a0that the International Olympic Committee may disapprove of some of these changes, having put in place strict rules about NOCs being independent from government.<\/p>\n
