AUSTIN, Texas, December 3. DURING the first night of short course yard competition at the Texas Invitational, Arizona's Jean Basson and Jack Brown put up an NCAA Division I A cut each.<\/p>\n
Basson checked in with an A cut time of 4:15.22 in the men's 500 free. He beat Longhorn's Michael Klueh by a wide margin with Klueh finishing second in 4:19.70. Arizona's Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or grabbed third in 4:21.77.<\/p>\n
Brown claimed an A cut in the men's 200 IM with a 1:44.05. UC Davis' Scott Weltz placed second in 1:45.48, while Arizona's Cory Chitwood continued his comeback from surgery last year with a third-place 1:45.57.<\/p>\n
Arizona's Leone Vorster, Justine Schluntz, Emma Darlington and Ana Agy opened the night with a triumphant time of 1:30.87 in the women's 200 free relay. Texas' Karlee Bispo, Bethany Adams, Kelsey Amundsen and Katie Riefenstahl finished second in 1:31.27. Wisconsin's Sara Goff, Maggie Meyer, Ruby Martin and Rosie Morahan took third in 1:31.79.<\/p>\n
In an exciting finish, Texas' Jimmy Feigen, Dave Walters, Dax Hill and Benjamin Van Roekel surfaced victorious in the men's 200 free relay with a 1:19.23. Arizona's Jordan Smith, Adam Small, Rob Iddiols and Luke Pechmann placed a close second in 1:19.27, while Auburn's Kohlton Norys, Tyler McGill, Karl Krug and Gideon Louw completed the top three in 1:19.34.<\/p>\n
Arizona's Alyssa Anderson held off Texas' Leah Gingrich, 4:40.05 to 4:40.67, in the women's 500 free. Arizona's Susana Helms claimed third in 4:43.31 with Tucson Ford's Lacey Nymeyer taking fourth in 4:43.55.<\/p>\n
Texas' Kathleen Hersey followed in the women's 100 fly with a top time of 52.32. Arizona picked up second through fifth as Ana Agy (52.51), Whitney Lopus (53.10), Jenny Forster (53.45) and Erin Campbell (53.53) represented the Wildcats well.<\/p>\n
Tucson Ford's Masayu Kishida cruised in the men's 100 fly with a winning readout of 46.15. Texas' Ricky Berens touched second in 46.44, while Arizona's A.J. Tipton wound up third in 47.33.<\/p>\n
Hersey claimed her second title of the night with a 1:57.55 in the women's 200 IM. Forster captured second in 1:58.72, while Tucson Ford's Whitney Myers hit third just behind in 1:58.74.<\/p>\n
Tucson Ford's Lara Jackson, who owns the American record with a 21.27 leadoff at last year's NCAA's, won the women's 50 free in 22.44. Wisconsin's Maggie Meyer raced to second in 22.58, while Bispo checked in with a third-place 22.64.<\/p>\n
Arizona's Jordan Smith snared the men's 50 free in 19.54, while Kishida finished second in 19.66. Feigen wound up third in 19.74.<\/p>\n
In diving action, Texas' Drew Livingston (387.05) and Matt Cooper (376.30) placed first and second in the men's one-meter. Hawaii's Doug Cohen took third in 312.75. Texas' Megan Taylor won the women's three-meter with 313.50 points, while Wyoming's Stephanie Ortiz took second with 311.80 points. UCLA's Karina Silva snared third with 298.95 points.<\/p>\n
Arizona demonstrated some serious relay depth in the women's 400 medley relay with a 1-2 finish. Agy, Annie Chandler, Lopus and Schluntz won in 3:34.34, while Erin Campbell, Ellyn Baumgardner, Forster and Andrea Boritzke took second in 3:41.36. Wisconsin's Meyer, Elizabeth Brooks, Karlyn Hougan and Morahan placed third in 3:42.47.<\/p>\n
Arizona also won the men's 400 medley relay as Chitwood, Marcus Titus, Tipton and Joel Greenshields won in 3:10.34. Texas' Hill Taylor, Scott Spann, Ricky Berens and Feigen took second in 3:11.40.
