HARVARD extended its dominance of Eastern swimming to a record six consecutive championships here this evening as the Crimson splashed to a 1560-1300.5 victory over Princeton at West Point's Crandall Pool.

Led by sophomore backstroker-individual medleyist Dan Shevchik, who won three events; teammate John Cole, a distance specialist who won the 500-1000-1650 frees and freshman breaststroker Rassan Grant, who set records en route to the 100-200 double, the Crimson of Coach Tim Murphy were never headed.

Cole began the evening's competition with a wire-to-wire 1650 win in a pool, meet and NCAA automatic cut 14:58.96 — his career best by some 20 seconds. Yale junior Mike Schulte was runner-up (15:19.24).Then Shevchik stepped to the blocks, and a minute forty-four and forty-eight hundredths seconds later had his third gold of the meet to go along with wins in the 200 IM and 400 IM. Shevchik's previous 200 back pr was a 1:45.14 from last year's Easterns. The place position went to Yale's George Gleason (pr and Eli school record 1:44.74) with the show spot occupied by Harvard's Michael Im (1:44.90). Im hs been 1:44.43 earlier in the season, his career-best.

Princeton soph Jesse Gage, who won the 100 fly last night for the second consecutive season, took command in the 100 free and raced to a 44.92-45.31 win over Harvard's Leif Drake. Gage went a pr 44.64 in qualifying.

Another doubler for the Crimson was breaststroker Rassan Grant, who set a pool record with his 1:59.63 pr in the 200. He's about a second and-a-quarter above the "A" cut but well below the "B" standard and has a shot at making the Big Dance.

The final individual event, the 200 fly, went to Princeton's Carl Hessler, whose 1:45.60 was both a pool and meet record. Thwe old pool record belonged to some guy named Spitz. Spitz went a 1:46.89 at the '72 NCAAs to set the pool record that lasted nearly 30 years. The old meet record was 1:47.05 done in 1993.

Columbia's Mark Fichera repeated his 1-meter diving triumph on the 3-meter board with a 600.10 point total.

The 400 sprint relay saw Princeton establish a pool and meet record with its 2:57.66, and Gage led off with the fastest 100 oft he meet and a pr too — 44.17.

RESULTS FOR SATURDAY 3/3/01
U.S. Military Academy
EISL Championship Meet – 3/1/01 to 3/3/01

Results
Event 15 Men 1650 Yard Freestyle
===============================================================================
Pool Records: ! 15:07.08  1982        Corbisiero
Meet Records:   15:06.79  1995
NCAA A Cut: @ 15:06.92
NCAA B Cut: # 15:34.12
Name                    Year School                           Finals Points
===============================================================================
1 Cole, John                FR Harvard                       14:58.96&  32
24.58   27.09   27.45   27.35   27.51   27.27   27.50   27.27
27.56   27.05   27.74   27.28   27.23   27.23   27.43   27.22
27.48   27.40   27.45   27.29   27.54   27.41   27.27   27.31
27.59   27.20   27.53   27.52   27.47   27.43   27.30   27.06
25.80
2 Schulte, Mike             JR Yale                          15:19.24#  28
25.51   27.75   28.00   28.07   28.21   28.04   27.86   28.00
28.21   28.02   28.20   28.18   28.08   28.08   28.08   28.15
28.14   27.90   28.15   28.14   27.98   28.13   28.07   28.02
28.01   27.81   27.98   27.90   27.80   27.69   27.68   27.25
26.14
3 Volz, E.
