Harvard's men's swim team remains at the head of the class in its quest for a record sixth-consecutive Eastern Intercollegiate Championship after two days of splashing here this evening.<\/p>\n
Coach Tim Murphy's New England powerhouse holds a 1086-852.5 point lead over Princeton going into today's (Saturday's) final session. Yale is third (735), followed by Brown (669), Navy (482), Columbia (460), Penn (362), Army (335.5), Cornell (329) and Dartmouth (222).<\/p>\n
Harvard ws led today by sophomore medley specialist Dan Shevchik, who set school and meet records with a very fast 3:46.69 400 IM clocking — eighth-fastest nationally and a drop of more than four seconds off his previous pr of 3:50.72 that won last year's Easterns title.<\/p>\n
Shevchik started off his winning streak opening day with a 1:48.23 pr win in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n
Other Harvard winners tonight included a 1000 free record 8:59.15 by John Cole, who won the 500 free in a pr 4:20+. Cole broke the meet record of 9:03.74 and the pool record of 9:01.31 by Columbia's Tony Corbisiero from nearly 20 years ago (1982). Tony C. became the Lions' only NCAA male individual champ ever when he won the 1650 free as a senior in 1983 with his 14:46.29 — still the conference record.<\/p>\n
Of course the Lions recently had a multi-NCAA women's champ in Cristina Teuscher, who was also Sydney Olympian. Interestingly, both Teuscher and Corbisiero trained with the same club coach, Badger's John Collins. <\/p>\n
Princeton soph Jesse Gage broke Harvard's victory monopoly with his 48.17 100 fly title, defending the race he won last season in a pr 47.87.<\/p>\n
Brown's Jeff Miksis also got into the victory column with his 1:37.55 200 free title, but Harvard freshman George Rassan stunned the field in the 100 breast with a pool and school-record and pr 54.52, .01 off the meet record. The Eastern record belongs to Princeton's Rich Korhammer with his 54.43 from the '89 NCAAs.<\/p>\n
Crimson senior Michael Im won the 100 back (48.24). Im had gone a pr 48.09 leading off Harvard's 400 medley relay opening night — a nice drop from his previous best of 48.64 from the Longhorn Invitational at Texas last December.<\/p>\n
Harvard handily won the 800 free relay in 6:36.13, making the NCAA "B" cut, in the night's final race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
