CANBERRA, Australia, November 26. SYDNEY 2000 gold medallist Ashley Callus has broken the Australian record in the men's 50m freestyle for the second time in a day, taking 0.05 off the mark he set this morning at the AIS Speedo International in Canberra.<\/p>\n
Racing against rookie Telstra Dolphin Matt Abood from the Sydney University club, Callus hit the wall in a time of 21.19 with Abood touching in at 22.74 to take out the head-to-head clash and a new national mark.<\/p>\n
At 30 years of age and considered a veteran of the sport, Callus was happy with his performance in the second last event of the evening but more impressed with his consistency over the season so far.<\/p>\n
"At the end of the day it's great to do fast times and see what I can possibly do, and that would have won a medal at Worlds," said Callus.<\/p>\n
"But I've been consistently going under 22 seconds so I'm really happy with what I'm doing at the moment."<\/p>\n
In other events 200m butterfly specialist Nick D'Arcy swam a solid race winning by two body lengths in a time of 1.55.54, just over a second outside his Australian record set in March this year. Christopher Wright from the Commercial club was second in 1.59.09 and third was Calum Timms from Macquarie University (1.55.54).<\/p>\n
World championship gold medallist Jessicah Schipper from the Commercial club in Queensland touched out Ellen Gandy (58.57) from Great Britain to take out the women's 100m butterfly in 58.55. Marieke Guehrer from the Melbourne Vicentre came a close third in 58.97.<\/p>\n
In the women's 200m freestyle Merindah Dingjan from AIS finished first in 1.59.32, with Blair Evans second in 1.59.72 and Kelly Stubbins third 1.59.82.<\/p>\n
The men's 100m backstroke was won by Daniel Arnamnart in a time of 54.74 while backing up from his third in the 100 free was Ashley Delaney (55.48) in second with Daniel Blackborrow from Melbourne's Vicentre with 55.69.<\/p>\n
AIS training partners completed a clean sweep in the men's 100m freestyle final, with Tommaso D'Orsogna first, touching with a time of 49.13, Cameron Prosser second in 49.25 and Delaney in third, 49.75. In a strong field, newly crowned Australia's Celebrity Master Chef Eamon Sullivan placed 8th, with his SOPAC training partner Andrew Lauterstein coming sixth and Abood seventh.<\/p>\n
Returning from her recent stint overseas for the World Cup series, Leisel Jones from the Nunawading club in Victoria took out the women's 100m breaststroke in a time of 107.07. Tessa Wallace was second in 108.24, with Jones' training partner Sarah Katsoulis finishing third (108.92).<\/p>\n
Katsoulis then got the better of Jones in the 50m breaststroke with Geoff Huegill also continuing his comeback with victory in the 50m butterfly.<\/p>\n
