﻿{"id":228088,"date":"2016-11-05T00:31:12","date_gmt":"2016-11-05T07:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=228088"},"modified":"2016-11-05T23:15:26","modified_gmt":"2016-11-06T06:15:26","slug":"big-ten-weekly-recap-iowa-purdue-split","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-weekly-recap-iowa-purdue-split\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Ten Weekly Recap: No. 1 Michigan Falls to Virginia; Iowa, Purdue Split"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dan D\u2019Addona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The top-ranked University of Michigan women&#8217;s swimming and diving team split its double dual, beating Penn State (270-83) and falling to No. 6 Virginia (196.5-156.5) on Saturday (Nov. 5) at the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PJ Ransford, Evan White, Charlie Swanson<\/strong> an <strong>Jacob Montague<\/strong> each won individual events to pace the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men&#8217;s swimming and diving team to wins over No. 25 Virginia (203-140) and Big Ten foe Penn State (217-126).<\/p>\n<p>After winning two events yesterday (Friday, Nov. 4), <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> added to her bounty on Saturday, tying for first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.47; a pool record) and also beating Virginia&#8217;s <strong>Leah Smith<\/strong>, a U.S. Olympian, in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.35).<\/p>\n<p>The other individual victor on the day was junior <strong>Clara Smiddy<\/strong>, who touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.41).<\/p>\n<p>Virginia\u2019s Smith won the women\u2019s 1,000 free in 9:32.03 and the 400 IM in 4:13.19.<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mgoblue.com\/sports\/m-swim\/stats\/110516aaa.html\">here<\/a> for complete results.<\/p>\n<h3>Iowa, Purdue split<\/h3>\n<p>The University of Iowa men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams hosted Missouri State and Purdue in a triple dual on Friday.\u00a0 The Iowa men topped both Purdue (151-149) and Missouri State (176-118), while the women split, topping the Bears (237-622) and falling to the Boilermakers (178-122).<\/p>\n<p>Iowa\u2019s <strong>Kenneth Meade<\/strong> and <strong>Jack Smith<\/strong> each won two events on Friday. Mende touched first in the 100 (48.98) and 200 back (1:47.10), swimming to season-best times in both events. Smith sprinted to first-place finishes in the 50 and 100 free, recording times of 20.21 and 44.7.<\/p>\n<p>The Purdue women won 10 of the 16 events, improving to 5-1 in duals this season with the head-to-head wins against the Hawkeyes (178-122) and Missouri State (252-48).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaersten Meitz<\/strong> was a three-time winner, posting two NCAA provisional-qualifying times with an impressive sweep of the 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle races.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marat Amaltdinov, Meagan Lim<\/strong> and <strong>Steele Johnson<\/strong> each won two events for Purdue.<\/p>\n<p>Amaltdinov swept the breaststroke events with a pair of season-best times for the second Friday in a row, improving on his NCAA provisional-qualifying times. Johnson swept the springboard diving events to improve to 7-for-8 in event victories this season. The men won 199-96, while the women won 203-90.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nick Orf<\/strong> posted a season-best time of 1:50.63 to secure a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. <strong>Matt Barnard<\/strong> had another solid performance on the boards, sweeping the events. He posted a score of 375.9 in 1-meter diving, and 392.10 in 3-meter diving.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s meet, <strong>Chantal Nack<\/strong> posted a career in-season best during the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.48. <strong>Breanne Siwicki<\/strong> won both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:06.89) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:23.59).<\/p>\n<h3>OSU defeats Denison<\/h3>\n<p>The Buckeyes defeated another Division III power. After topping Kenyon last week, the OSU men beat Denison 186-103.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Josh Fleagle<\/strong> won the 200 freestyle (1:37.34).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark Belanger<\/strong> won the 100 freestyle (45.79) and <strong>Thomas Trace<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n<h3>Nebraska ends skid vs. Kansas<\/h3>\n<p>All-American <strong>Anna Filipcic<\/strong> smashed the Nebraska record in the 3-meter dive while adding a <strong>Devaney Natatorium<\/strong> record on the one-meter board to power the Nebraska swimming and diving team&#8217;s 198-101 victory over Kansas on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>With the victory, Nebraska improved to 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2012-13, while snapping an eight-dual losing streak that spanned 12 years against Kansas.<\/p>\n<h3>Indiana sweeps Michigan State<\/h3>\n<p>With the victory, the No. 1-ranked Indiana men&#8217;s team improves to 7-0 on the season, while the No. 12-ranked Hoosier women&#8217;s team moved to 5-2 on the season. In total, Indiana won 28 of the 32 events on the day..<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brooklyn Snodgrass<\/strong> took the victory in the women&#8217;s 100 backstroke, winning with a time of 55.30.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s 200 butterfly, <strong>Reagan Cook<\/strong> earned the victory for IU, touching first in a time of 2:02.32.
