I Men: Dusing Stars as Texas Takes A Big Lead at Big 12 Champs

AUSTIN, TX., March 1. THE 'HORNS are hotter than the Shaq-Kobe feud!

Bidding for an unprecedented 22nd-straight conference championship (they have 17 Southwest and 4 Big 12s), Coach Eddie Reese's thundering Longhorns — defending NCAA Division I champs and ranked No. 1 nationally since the fall of 1999 — stomped the field en route 219-point lead over runner-up Texas A&M in the opening day of the Big 12 Championships here today.

Texas splashed to a 441-223 lead over Coach Mel Nash's A&M Aggies, with Nebraska third (171), followed by Missouri (157), Iowa State (153) and Kansas (80).

Led by seniors Nate Dusing and Scott Goldblatt, who became only the fourth and fifth Longhorns ever to win the same event four years running at the conference championship, Texas swept to victories in every event–including nation-leading times in the 200 IM (Dusing, 1:44.31) and 400 medley relay (3:07.69).

The 'Horns started off the night's proceedings at the Texas Swimming Center, site of the U.S. World Championship Trials meet the last week of this month, by racing to a 1:18.27-1:18.77 200 free relay win over Iowa State. Texas' time was just off its meet 1:17.94 from the '99 Championships and makes the NCAA "A" cut.

Then Goldblatt won his fourth-consecutive 500 free title in 4:19.76, a seasonal-best. Runner-up was Olympic teammate Jamie Rauch (4:21.42) with the 'Horns Tim Mullin (4:23.15) and Chris Kemp (4:25.01) third and fourth. These latter two made the NCAA "B" cut in the prelims (4:21.64/4:21.15) and Rauch's time also is under the consideration standard.

Dusing's 1:44.31 IM clocking is not only No. 1 nationally, surpassing Florida's Duncan Sherrard's 1:45.38 from last week's SECs in Tuscaloosa, but is a pr by more than a second. His old personal record was a 1:45.50 from last year's Big 12s, and the time also breaks the Longhorn and Big 12-SWC record of 1:45.46 by Jon Jennings from the 1994 NCAAs in Minneapolis.

Teammate Tommy Hannan went the second-fastest time nationally with his runner-up 1:44.50 (a drop of nearly two and-a-half seconds from his old pr of 1:46.98 from last year's Big 12s), and third was Longhorn Joey Montague (1:47.03).

The 50 free went to freshman Ian Crocker (pr 19.70), who at last year's Olympics set an American record in the 100 fly while becoming the first swimmer from Maine to make an Olympic team, let alone set an American record. Runner-up was teammate Leffie Crawford (19.82 after a pr 19.66 in the prelims). Longhorn Matt Ulrickson (20.08) was third and he went a 19.93 pr in the prelims.

The medley relay was a scorcher from the starting gun, with Dusing leading off in a sizzling 46.58, No.2 nationally to Tennessee's Michael Gilliam's 46.43 from SECs. Primarily a butterflyer until this season, Dusing's previous pr in the 100 back was a 47.87 from last December's Longhorn Invitational. The Texas school- and American-record in the 100 back is 44.92 by Neil Walker from the '97 NCAAs (prelim relay leadoff). That night Walker went 45.07, No. 2 performance all-time.

The 'Horns' Brendan Hansen, only a freshman, split an excellent 52.83 for the breastsroke leg, and then Hannan lit up the water with his 45.77 fly leg. On the anchor Crocker ripped off a 42.41 leg and the final time of 3:07.69 broke the old meet standard of 3:11.11 by a healthy margin.

Men 200 Yard Freestyle Relay
===============================================================================
Meet: 1:17.94 3/1999 Texas A&M
1:18.77 AUTO
1:21.13 CONS
===============================================================================
1  Texas          1:19.83    1:18.27 AUTO    40
2.
