MIAMI (Oct. 31, 2016<\/span>)<\/strong> \u2013 FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia<\/strong> announced on Monday<\/span> the contract extension of FIU Swimming and Diving Coach Randy<\/strong> Horner<\/strong> through 2020.\u00a0 Horner has been at the helm of FIU Swimming and Diving since 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cRandy Horner has done a tremendous job leading our swimming and diving program,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cWhat our student-athletes have accomplished in the pool, in the classroom and in the community, is outstanding. We are thrilled that FIU swimming and diving will continue to be under the guidance of Coach Horner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s nice to feel appreciated and wanted,\u201d Horner said. \u201cPete and Julie<\/strong> (Berg<\/strong> \u2013 Senior Associate AD\/SWA) have shown me their commitment to the traditions we started here at FIU by extending my contract once again.\u00a0 I could not be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horner guided FIU to its second-straight conference title this past season, scoring the second-most points in Conference USA Championship history. The Panthers claimed 15 of the 21 total titles during the four-day championships en route to a 954-point result \u2013 the most-decisive victory in C-USA Championships history.<\/p>\n

In all, FIU won 28 medals, including 15 gold, while setting seven school records as Horner was named the C-USA Coach of the Year \u2013 his third such award in the last six years.<\/p>\n

The squad also earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team honors in both the fall and spring. FIU has been named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for the seven-straight semesters and 11th<\/sup> overall since Horner took the program\u2019s reigns in 2010-11. During the spring, FIU recorded a 3.42 team GPA \u2013 swimming and diving’s highest semester GPA under Horner.<\/p>\n

This past summer, Horner also served as Olympic swim coach for Botswana, coaching FIU\u2019s Naomi Ruele<\/strong> and Nova Southeastern’s David Van Der Colff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Entering his seventh season at FIU, Horner has had four conference swimmers of the year, five conference divers of the year and the Panthers have won 40 gold medals in conference championship competition.<\/p>\n
