﻿{"id":227045,"date":"2016-10-28T14:58:19","date_gmt":"2016-10-28T21:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=227045"},"modified":"2016-10-29T18:41:56","modified_gmt":"2016-10-30T01:41:56","slug":"big-ten-weekly-recap-no-1-indiana-sweeps-tennessee-kentucky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-weekly-recap-no-1-indiana-sweeps-tennessee-kentucky\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Ten Weekly Recap: No. 1 Indiana Sweeps Tennessee, Kentucky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dan D&#8217;Addona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After earning the No. 1 ranking in the first in-season coaches poll, the Indiana men&#8217;s swim team went out and proved it belonged at the top of the rankings.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosiers crushed No. 13 Tennessee 200-100 and No. 18 Kentucky 195-105 on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the No. 12 Indiana women edged No. 11 Tennessee 152-148 and beat No. 21 Kentucky 169-131.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosier men started\u00a0 strong with the 200 medley relay team of <strong>Bob Glover, Ian Finnerty, Vini Lanza<\/strong> and <strong>Ali Khalafalla<\/strong> winning in 1:27.99.<\/p>\n<p>Khalafalla won the 50 freestyle in a NCAA B cut time of 19.91.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> and <strong>Anze Tavcar<\/strong> went 1-2 for the Hoosiers in the 200 freestyle, with Pieroni winning with a NCAA B cut time of 1:37.48. Tavcar touched second with a mark of 1:38.32. For the women,<strong> Kennedy Goss<\/strong> won with a time of 1:48.63.<\/p>\n<p>The Indiana men&#8217;s sprinters overwhelmed the competition in the 100 freestyle, taking the top-three spots. Pieroni led the charge, touching first in a NCAA B cut time of 43.89. Tavcar was second in 44.30, while Khalafalla was third in 45.02.<\/p>\n<p>Glover won the 100 backstroke in 48.83,.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s 1-meter dive, the Hoosiers were dominant.<strong> Michael Hixon<\/strong> took first with a score of 404.45, while <strong>James Connor<\/strong> was second with a total of 394.30.<strong> Joshua Arndt<\/strong> was third with 333.55 \u2014 all NCAA qualifying scores in the event.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s meet, <strong>Lilly King<\/strong> was back to her winning ways in the 100 breaststroke for the Indiana women, touching the wall in a NCAA B cut time of 1:02.13. King, the reigning NCAA champion, won the 200 breaststroke with a NCAA B cut time of 2:14.25.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s 1,000 freestyle, <strong>Stephanie Marchuk<\/strong> won in 10:01.63.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s 3-meter dive, <strong>Michal Bower<\/strong> won with a score of 342.15, while <strong>Jessica Parratto<\/strong> took second with a total of 293.80 with NCAA qualifying scores.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s 500 freestyle, <strong>Kennedy Goss<\/strong> touched the wall first in a time of 4:50.59. On the men&#8217;s side, Elkamash won with a NCAA B cut time of 4:24.44. Miller was third overall with a mark of 4:28.11.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 butterfly, with Lanza touching first with a NCAA B cut time of 48.07.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s 3-meter dive, with Connor winning with a score of 394.20.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosier men put an exclamation point on their day, as the 400 freestyle relay team of Khalafalla, Pieroni, Tavcar and Lorentz won with a time of 2:57.11.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee\u2019s <strong>Kira Toussaint, Colleen Callahan, Maddy Banic<\/strong> and <strong>Alex Cleveland<\/strong> won the 200 medley relay (1:40.87). Toussaint won the 100 backstroke (53.56) and 100 freestyle (49.44).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather Lundstrom<\/strong> won the 200 butterfly (1:59.36). Banic won the 50 freestyle (23.45), leading a 1-2-3 finish with Cleveland (23.49) and <strong>Erika Brown<\/strong> (23.67). Banic won the 100 butterfly (54.26) ahead of Lundstrom (54.63).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Micah Bohon<\/strong>, Brown, Toussaint and Emily Allen won the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.82).<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee\u2019s<strong> Peter Stevens<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke (55.01). <strong>Matthew Dunphy<\/strong> won the 200 breaststroke (2:02.12). <strong>Sam McHugh<\/strong> won the 200 IM (1:49.2).<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky\u2019s <strong>Drew Aviotti<\/strong> won the 1,000 freestyle (9:07.71). Kyle Higgins won the 200 butterfly (1:45.5). <strong>Walker Thaning<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke (1:46.97).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danielle Galyer<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke (1:57.52). <strong>Rebecca Hamperian<\/strong> won 1-meter diving (299.1). <strong>Asia Seidt<\/strong> won the 200 IM (2:00.21).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purdue defeated by Notre Dame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Notre Dame men defeated Purdue 165-135, the Fighting Irish\u2019s first victory over the Boilermakers since the 2012-13 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish women took down Miami (224-74), Rutgers (221-78) and Purdue (190-110), posting their first win over the Boilermakers since the 2008-09 season.<\/p>\n<p>Purdue\u2019s <strong>Kaersten Meitz<\/strong> won the women\u2019s 500 freestyle (4:47.82) and 1,000 freestyle (9:55.65) and <strong>Nicolas McDowell<\/strong> won the men\u2019s race (9:18.71) and 500 in 4:30.75.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marat Amaltdinov<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke (55.39) and the 200 breaststroke (1:58.28).<\/p>\n<p>Notre Dame\u2019s <strong>Tabahn Afrik<\/strong> won the 100 freestyle (44.24).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minnesota tops Iowa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Minnesota men\u2019s swimming and diving defeated Iowa 185.5 to 113.5 Friday night in Minneapolis. The Gophers won 14 of 16 events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conner McHugh<\/strong> won both breaststroke events for the second time this fall. He finished in 54.60 in the 100 and 1:57.50 in the 200.<br \/>\nIn the 1,650 freestyle, <strong>Michael Messner<\/strong> won in 15:43.03. <strong>Logan Redondo<\/strong> won the 500 free in 4:32.21.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Barnard<\/strong> won on both diving springboards. He tallied scores of 413.40 in 1-meter and 373.75 in 3-meter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bowe Becker<\/strong> won the 100 and 200 free races. He won the 200 free from lane eight, touching in 1:39.44. Becker (44.59) and <strong>Paul Fair<\/strong> (44.80) took first and second in the 100. Fair (20.47) won the 50 free. <strong>Daryl Turner<\/strong> won at the 100-yard backstroke (48.75) and butterfly (47.74).<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota women\u2019s swimming and diving team beat Iowa 186-114 on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danielle Nack<\/strong> won the 200 and 100 free races. She finished the 200 free in 1:49.30, and the 100 in 50.31.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chantal Nack<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke (55.67) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.96). <strong>Brooke Zeiger<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke in 2:02.37.\u00a0 <strong>Breanne Siwicki<\/strong> won the 1,650 free in 17:03.62. Kierra Smith won the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.08, an NCAA provisional cut.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northwestern men fall to NC State, Duke<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Northwestern men&#8217;s swimming and diving team suffered its first setback of the season, falling to No. 3 North Carolina State, 185-108, Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justin Hanson<\/strong> won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.84, more than two second faster than the rest of the field.<\/p>\n<p>Hanson placed third in the 200 breaststroke later in the meet with a time of 2:06.26.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Jordan Wilimovsky<\/strong> <dfn><\/dfn>took second in the 1,000 free in 8:56.00, just behind NC State&#8217;s Anton Ipsen&#8217;s 8:55.21. Wilimovsky placed second to Ipsen later on in the 500 free with a time of 4:25.60.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Wilimovksy set a Duke pool record in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:04.24 in Northwestern&#8217;s 185-110 loss.<\/p>\n<p>Wilimovsky&#8217;s time was more than 22 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher. He also swam the 500 free in 4:27.83 to win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charlie Cole<\/strong><dfn> <\/dfn>won the 200 freestyle (1:40.48) to go 1-2 with Wilimovsky (1:41.04).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northwestern tops Illinois, Rutgers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats improved to 5-0 with a 178-122 victory over Illini and 187-113 win over the Scarlet Knights.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Valerie Gruest Slowing<\/strong> continued her strong start to the 2016 campaign, picking up three wins for the second-straight week. She won the 1,000 free by two seconds with a time of 10:08.01 then turned around to win the 200 free with a time of 1:50.94. She finished her day with a win in the 500 free, touching the wall in 4:54.02.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Mary Warren<\/strong><dfn><\/dfn> clocked a 23.38 in the 50 free and 52.11 in the 100 free to win both events.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ohio State tops DIII power Kenyon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ohio State men\u2019s defeated Kenyon College 186-103 on Friday evening. The Buckeyes posted the fastest time in all 14 swimming events and the top score in both diving events.<\/p>\n<p>NCAA defending champion <strong>Colin Zeng<\/strong> picked up right where he left off, posting the top score on both 1- and 3-meter. On the former he earned a score of 406.95, the only diver of the night go score above 400. On 3-meter he earned a score of 386.10.<\/p>\n<p>B<strong>rayden Seal<\/strong> (9:21.88) won the 1,000 freestyle. <strong>Josh Fleagle<\/strong> (1:37.98) won the 200 freestyle, <strong>Mark Belanger<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke (49.60) and <strong>Michael Eaton<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke (58.13).<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio State women won 173-115.<\/p>\n<p>Divers <strong>Haley Allen<\/strong> and <strong>Lara Tarvit<\/strong> won events. Tarvit won her first collegiate event, posting a score of 297.15 on 1-meter. Allen took the top spot on three-meter with her score of 317.55.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amanda McNullty<\/strong> won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.25 and <strong>Chantel Wynn<\/strong> returned to the top spot with a victory in the 50 freestyle (23.71). <strong>Kaitlyn Ferrara<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke (2:03.06) and <strong>Lindsey Clary<\/strong> won the 200 breaststroke (2:18.17).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nebraska diver sets record in win<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna Filipcic<\/strong> set a Devaney Natatorium record in the 1-meter dive to lead Nebraska to a 191-105 victory over Northern Iowa on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Filipcic, who earned All-America honors for the Huskers in 2016, produced a Devaney-record 322.05 in the 1-meter, while adding a victory in the 3-meter event with a score of 357.48.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin Oeltjen<\/strong> earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke (56.28) and the 100 butterfly (56.57).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Dan D&#8217;Addona.
