IRVINE, Calif. Feb. 24. THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SANTA BARBARA swam away with both the women's and men's Big West titles, but it was not before they emerged bloodied, but victorious, in a down-to-the-
\nwire struggle with upstart, University of the Pacific.<\/p>\n
Santa Barbara watched its lead diminish minute-by-minute, but managed to hang on for a ten point win in the women's division, 899-889, and an 80-point win in the men's, 904-824.<\/p>\n
WOMEN'S EVENTS
\nAs on the two previous days of competition, Pacific managed to win most of the events. Today, the Pacific women won four of the six swimming events contested, with Santa Barbara taking one and Cal State, the other. A Cal Poly diver won the one diving event. Still, it was Santa Barbara's depth that ultimately prevailed.<\/p>\n
Santa Barbara started the final day of competition with a one-two-sweep of the 1650, as Romina Mosquera (17:12.69) notched an easy win.<\/p>\n
Then it was Pacific's turn. Sarah Marshall scored her second victory of the meet, clocking a meet record 1:59.15 for the 200 backstroke. The time broke the old mark of 1:59.92 by Susan Eisele of Nevada in 1998. UOP teammate Shawna Winters was a strong second (2:00.24).<\/p>\n
Robin Errecart won her second event here, taking the 100 free in 51.34, as Santa Barbara swimmers finished 2-3-4-5.<\/p>\n
Cal State's Lisa Andrade then broke the UCSB-UOP monopoly, by streaking to a win in the 200 breast in 2:14.16 in what was the meet's outstanding performance. Andrade, who also won the 100 breast, destroyed the meet record of 2:16.76 set by UNLV's Mary Alice Torgerson in 1993. UOP's Kristy Mathews clocked 2:15.62 for second place, also under the old mark.<\/p>\n
Pacific's Shannon Catalano easily won the 200 fly (2:02.39), while Cal Poly's Ariana Rademaker edged UCI's Allison Magda to take the one-meter diving.<\/p>\n
Pacific finished up by winning the 400 free relay in 3:24.90, but Santa Barbara's second-place finish ensured the Lady Gauchos of the team crown.<\/p>\n
MEN'S EVENTS
\nOn the men's side, the day's events began just as the women's did, with Santa barbara's Eric Koch (15:27.81) and Matt Schubert (15:43.17) taking the top two spots in the 1650.<\/p>\n
UOP countered with Piotr Florczyk's victory in the 200 back, his 1:46.14 falling just shy of the meet record of 1:45.69 he set last year. Pacific's Matt Smart followed with a victory in the 100 free (44.84) with teammate Danny Johnson (45.31) close behind.<\/p>\n
Pacific's versatile Filip Wronski reversed the tables on UCSB's Ethan Hall, eking out a win in the 200 breast in 1:59.82 to Hall's 2:00.06.<\/p>\n
Ryan Kock, UCSB, followed with a convincing win in the 200 fly, clocking 1:48.88.<\/p>\n
Cal-Irvine went one-two in the 3-meter diving, with Ted Zervoudakis taking the top spot and Blair Roberts the runner-up.<\/p>\n
Finally, Pacific demonstrated its sprinting depth by winning the 400 free relay in a swift 2:58.79. <\/p>\n
