PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, November 14. THE Rutgers swimming and diving team defeated West Virginia, 159-125, in a dual meet Saturday. Freshman Brittney Kuras (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and senior captain Catherine Whetstone(Haven Beach, N.J.) grabbed the headlines of the day, each winning three events. <\/p>\n
Individually, Kuras touched the wall in 52.02 for a first-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. In the 200 free, the rookie bested the group with a time of 1:51.71. With the 200 medley relay, Kuras joined Whetstone, Shayna Longacre (Barto, Pa.), and Taylor Curado (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) to finish in 1:45.19 for first place. <\/p>\n
In addition to the 200 medley relay, Whetstone beat the field in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. In the 100, the captain finished with a time of 55.82, while the Haven Beach, N.J. local touched the wall in 2:03.20 in the 200. Longacre – who won BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week the last time the Scarlet Knights competed – finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.60). <\/p>\n
On the diving side, senior captain Erin Saunders (Holmes, Pa.) grabbed first in both the one and three meter dives. She racked up 282.68 in the one meter, tallying 306.37 points on the three meter board. <\/p>\n
Rookies continued to step up for RU. In addition to Kuras outstanding day, Melanie Gaffey (Bohemia, N.Y.) won the 50 free with a time of 24.37 and redshirt freshman Taylor Zafir (Wheaton, Ill.) grabbed first in the 200 breast (2:22.16). Overall, the Scarlet Knights won 11 events. <\/p>\n
RU steps out of conference play next weekend, traveling to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Invitational. <\/p>\n
