{"id":225635,"date":"2016-10-18T13:57:31","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T20:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=225635"},"modified":"2016-10-18T14:34:49","modified_gmt":"2016-10-18T21:34:49","slug":"university-of-north-dakota-will-not-eliminate-any-athletic-programs-swimming-diving-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-north-dakota-will-not-eliminate-any-athletic-programs-swimming-diving-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"University Of North Dakota Will NOT Eliminate Any Athletic Programs; Swimming &#038; Diving Safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of North Dakota President\u00a0<strong>Mark Kennedy<\/strong> announced Tuesday that the school will not be eliminating any athletic programs.\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-north-dakota-swim-program-in-hands-of-president\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> last week that six different teams (including swimming and diving) could potentially be discontinued at the end of this year,\u00a0but efforts from student-athletes, coaches, alumni and the CSCAA have helped to stave off that fate.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Interim school President\u00a0<strong>Ed Schafer\u00a0<\/strong>had proposed cutting teams to help lower costs, but the school&#8217;s Interscholastic Athletic Committee (IAC) recommended that\u00a0Kennedy keep all existing programs, believing that\u00a0the teams&#8217; value outweighed expenses. The school now figures to offset costs with ticket price and student fee increases.<\/p>\n<p>Head swimming and diving coach\u00a0<strong>Chris Maiello<\/strong> spoke to the IAC last week and gave an emotional presentation while fighting for his program&#8217;s survival. Arguments from former coach\u00a0<strong>Mike Stromberg<\/strong>, prominent alumni and CSCAA executive\u00a0<strong>Joel Shinofield<\/strong> all helped sway the IAC and Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>Shinofield believes that the program will require significant\u00a0alumni support to ensure its long-term viability.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy released a statement Tuesday confirming his decision:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Thank you to\u00a0the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee\u00a0(IAC)\u00a0members\u00a0for their careful consideration of\u00a0the\u00a0optimum path for UND\u2019s athletic program. Their commitment to One UND\u00a0is demonstrated\u00a0by\u00a0their support of\u00a0all\u00a0our sports teams, even though to do this will mean a reallocation from other priorities.\u00a0I affirm their\u00a0recommendation\u00a0for continuing with our current level of\u00a0support\u00a0for actively\u00a0sponsored programs\u00a0and their authorization for me to invest\u00a0up to $7.3 million\u00a0in\u00a0additional institutional\u00a0support to do so.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">As several committee members discussed, and as a resource document that was available and discussed by the committee before the vote states, increasing institutional funding for athletics\u00a0by the amount suggested\u00a0would require the reallocation of resources from other priorities, including academics.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Based on the recommendation of the IAC, we will do everything possible to prudently support the\u00a0programs that attract a wide audience\u00a0(Men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball and hockey, football, volleyball), but our ability to\u00a0fund\u00a0the\u00a0maximum\u00a0number of scholarships\u00a0allowed by the NCAA\u00a0in\u00a0other programs\u00a0will\u00a0be dependent\u00a0on considerations necessary to stay in\u00a0compliance with Title IX\u00a0and\u00a0during this period of fiscal constraint will be dependent on additional outside resources.\u00a0This is necessary to limit adverse impact on priority academic funding.\u00a0We will pursue options suggested in the\u00a0IAC\u00a0recommendation\u00a0though feel compelled to recognize the\u00a0fact that all\u00a0will\u00a0depend on the agreement of others and\u00a0uncertainty\u00a0exists\u00a0that such hoped for additional funding will materialize.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">We will visit with both the Ralph\u00a0Engelstad\u00a0Arena and the\u00a0Alerus\u00a0Center leadership to review our contracts with those entities, although\u00a0it is uncertain\u00a0how much flexibility there is in those contracts\u00a0based on their responsibility for the upkeep\u00a0and maintenance of their\u00a0facilities\u00a0and other support they provide.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Competitively funding\u00a0scholarships\u00a0and other operating costs for\u00a0all of our sports\u00a0at\u00a0the level recommended by the IAC\u00a0will take concerted efforts by all interested parties.\u00a0Enhanced student support in terms of increased fees\u00a0would\u00a0require broad student support\u00a0and would occur\u00a0at a time when students may\u00a0be\u00a0also\u00a0asked\u00a0to\u00a0consider\u00a0<wbr \/>supporting an upgrade of\u00a0the Memorial Union.
