Feb. 22. RELYING on its depth, the University of California at Santa Barbara took commanding leads in both the men's and women's team scoring after the first day of competition at the Big West Conference Championships.<\/p>\n
In the men's team race, the Gauchos have 294.5 points, with the University of the Pacific (UOP) second with 237. Cal-Irvine is third (108.5) followed by Cal Poly (87) and Cal State, Northridge (39).<\/p>\n
The Lady Gauchos lead with 281 points, followed by UOP with 219, Cal Poly (93), Cal State, Northridge (89) and Cal-Irvine (83).<\/p>\n
MEN'S EVENTS
\nUOP swimmers won four of the five men's events contested today. Piotr Florczyk took the 500 yards freestyle in 4:24.98 while Matt Smart won the 50 free in 20.38. Pacific won the 200 free relay in 1:21.83, just nine-hundredths ahead of UCSB, and the 400 medley relay in 3:20.05. <\/p>\n
Only UCSB's Matt Wheeler could break Pacific's stranglehold on the top spot on the victory stand. Wheeler took the 200 yard individual medley in 1:48.74, more than two seconds ahead of UOP's Filip Wronski.<\/p>\n
WOMEN'S EVENTS
\nThe UOP women duplicated their male counterparts' feat, taking first place in four of the five events on the first day's program. Robin Errecart led a one-two-three Pacific sweep of the 500 with her 4:55.48. Marissa Taylor (4:57.50) and Leilani Avilla (4:58.95) followed her to the wall.<\/p>\n
The 200 IM fell to Pacific's Kris Willey in 2:02.81, after she posted a 2:01.84 in prelims. Teammate Kristy Matthews was second (2:03.88).<\/p>\n
Pacific also won both the 200 free relay (1:33.49) and the 400 medley relay (3:43.39).<\/p>\n
Danielle Steadman was the sole winner for the Lady Gauchos, as she took the 50 free in 23.93 at the head of a one-two-three-four Santa Barbara sweep. Julia King (23.99), Brenna Wilkinson (24.00) and Karin Finger (24.27) took second, third and fourth.<\/p>\n
